Hi,

Is there anyone on here with an X3 M40i?

I would like to your hear your experiences, with respect to performance, handling and fuel economy.

Thanks.

I was wondering the same thing last week actually.

Maybe there’s some closet X3 drivers on this forum

Resale on the M40i is dropping a bit below the 30d of similar age/mileage (2017, +30,000km), in general.
M40d would be the best of all worlds, but they are hen's teeth on the used market.

I haven't driven the M40i but this past weekend I had the opportunity to test drive the X3 M Competition and I can honestly say that it is an absolutely amazing car. Its just so perfect in every way possible, its not too big and not too small, its ideal. It extremely quick. I'd pick this over the new X5M Comp all day. Its got the S58 Engine which is based on the B58 found in the M40i version.

Coming back to the M40i, apart from it not being an M car, it should be an amazing all rounder. For the prices that they sitting at now brand new, I don't really know if its worth it, where if you add an additional 250-350k, you can find yourself in the X3M Comp.

Here's what I suggest you do if you considering buying an M40i brand new. I suggest you wait a few more months if you can and you might even find a low mileage X3M Comp going for about the same price, which would be a no-brainer.

2018 M40i are trading below R850k, with decent spec and mileage. I figure they may drop further, given that demand for the 30d is alot stronger and M40i tend to sit longer on the floor, even at these used prices.

Well if you go pre owned, then the M40i will be a good choice. Its a beast, you'll enjoy it.

Another thing about the X3, I felt it to be very light, it doesn't feel like an SUV, more like a bigger sporty hatch like the M140i but bigger. BMW mastered it when it came to designing this X3.

The Volvo V60 CC (162kw/440Nm) is still treating me well.
I plan on putting serious mileage on it after lockdown eases on inter-provincial travel.
I want to make the most of the remaining maintenance plan before it ends later next year.
I want to keep the V60 longer (the 5 cylinder diesels are very hardy), but the SO wants a fancier badge.
However, I don't want to spend big bucks on a less powerful car.
Will see how the sums work out in 2021.
M40i or even a decently specced (but now discontinued) 30i may seem like good buys.

On a side note, it is pretty interesting how well the new XC60 is retaining its used value.
XC60 T6s of similar age/mileage as M40is are trading at the same level, if not higher.
New generation Volvo SUVs (especially the XC60 and XC40) are in high demand - especially by the Sandton/bling brigade.

Have not owned or driven the X3 m40i but what I do know is that the 30d is much more suited for an x3 like vehicle. The torque delivery is exceptional which transforms the vehicle into a very capable and comfortable SUV. Having said that, I have just traded in my F30 330d for an M2 as I missed the exhaust note which enhances any driving experience.

I had the opportunity to drive the X3M Comp and and the X4M Comp this past week at the BMW Driving Experience...both these vehicles have been massively changed in feel.

Yes I know they were the M-cars but if I can compare the versatility and the feeling of the drive and how it performs...it is really amazing. If it is anything to go by, I would not hesitate to grab a X3 m40i....it has totally changed my perception of the "SUV" and its capabilities to perform with more of a performance DNA to it....diesel SUVs will always be awesome to me but to be able to push them and have them stick, handle and put the power down consistently is something else!

I had a run in with an X3 M40i not too long ago on Cedar Rd. I could just not get away from it, it would make an initial gap but the big girl would just stay there. I was quite impressed with it and it sounded incredible while doing it. Probably didnt even break a sweat doing that.
To top it off it was a tannie that was driving that missile.

Know that feeling - I was getting bossed around by a tannie in a Hyundai Getz yesterday for crying out loud.

Heard an X3 M40i drive very fast past me the previous day; they look good and sound lovely!

So, it seems that 2021 may be year when the trusty Swedish tractor gets replaced :(

I see that the G01 X3 30d is starting to fill up the used market (not as common as the 20d) a bit more than used M40i.

The M40i in price range would be 2018 and with 30,000km+. Granted, while there will be some MP left, I assume that these cars would have had heavy handed lives from the first owner - more so, if these were demos.

This means that the 30d, while not as sporty as the M40i, may be the better used buy given that first owners and test drivers would be less likely to drive it hard (there are no pops and crackles from the exhaust like the M40i). Especially, if it has plumpier tyres and a spare wheel optioned.

However, as was the case when I said that I wanted a used MX5 a year ago and went for something a bit different, I may change my mind.

Seeing as you got the m40i, how are you enjoying it?
Worth the money?
Did you manage to get a decently spec'd one?

No, I did not get the X3 M40i.
I decided to rather look for a proper (non-performance) family car and have a separate performance car.
Mixing both family and performance car duties into one vehicle will always result in a compromise.
In other posts, you would see me enquiring on an X1 20d (too lightweight for my gravel roads) and an X5 25d (a pretty decent vehicle, but was snapped up before I could make an offer).
The family car is still the Volvo for now. I am in no rush to get rid of it and will wait for the right used car to come along.
