technical G01 towbar not retracting back

Hi

The new owner of my G01 X3 says the towbar does not retract back. The light stays green, but the towbar does not move.

I last retracted the towbar 3 years ago. I have kept it open/extended since, mainly for rear bump safety.

Are there any reputable aftermarket places that can assist?

I imagine any place that can do Thule and Brink type removable tow bars should be able to assist.

E.g. Rack and Road Fitment Center (woodmead, honeydew, etc ) or any Rack Solids. These are franchises so they should find one closer to where they stay.

I don't think they will the touch the electrical tow bar on a X3.

You need to scan to see if the signal goes out.

BMW Cresta diagnosed the issue and said that new part to be ordered

P 871.60.6.887.640 - SET TRAILER

Cost is R24k with labour đŸ˜²

New owner also asking a non-BMW technician to advise.

I bought one for R6k off Facebook market place , fitment was not too bad.
100 x M6 bolts to remove and 4 big bolts, one plug. Took me less than 1 hour in my driveway.

Unless the control module is fried i would suspect that a good clean and lubrication of the mechanical mechanism will cure it.

I would start by checking the fuses, if it wasn't used in a while and is stiff the initial current draw would probably have exceeded the fuse rating.

On my E90, holding the button down for 30 sec while the car was idling reset the system after a faulty trailer wiring froze the thing.

Jeepers! That’s very close to a new tow bar.

@Clint@MMS AUTO mentioned something about plastic gears on these towbar motors, if I remember correctly. Maybe he can help?

FYI, I've also left my towbar sticking out this past year, as my aunt had 2 rear accidents on her X5, and the towbar did a "job well done". Both cars that bumped her were written off. 1 was a Taxi and the other was an SLK.
