From Reverse straight into Drive??

How bad is it for the gearbox when you reverse and while the car is still moving backward, you put it in drive?

It's bad, but if the car is still going afterwards, don't worry about it rather try avoid that move again.

Doing that will either bust something or not, if it survived, then it's still ok.

I'm very curious at the origins of that question.....

Depends how fast it is moving. If very low speed and engine revs are also low, it won't do much. If higher speed and higher revs, you are putting a lot of strain on your clutches, and you will be needing a gearbox rebuild sooner rather than later....

I did that to my father's Cressida once... :)
As you all know the Cressida's has strong gearboxes.
I had it going about 40km/h in reverse, slammed it straight to D...
needless to say, ripped all the gearbox seals, stripped the clutch, and broke 1 mounting. :mmm:
Will never, ever, EVER forget that hiding I got after that trick.
So to sum up... you try it again and I will have to "Skiet die bliksem!!"

You planning on reversing out of a truck and doing a J-turn, Michael Knight style? :)

Maybe I am planning a DIY manual conversion??? LOL..

I am just joking....

When I was a kid.... Loooooong, long time ago, may Dad had a Jaguar XJS and I remember me doing that a few times... no damage, but did not sound right to me. And this all came back to me when my son asked me if it is bad....... now you see, I never asked my Dad....

I wil have to have a sit down and a talk about the clutches and gears and exchange rate etc........

A friend of mine when learning to drive, was driving his dad's automatic honda ballade. He thought that when you slow down for a robot, you can just but the gearbox into park. :hammerhead: So from 20 km/h he put it in park. Needless to say the car ground to a halt and stalled. Don't think there was major damage, but needless to say he didn't do THAT again...

"D" is for drive
"R" is for racing

My dad had a rental automatic Corolla for a while. "N" 4000rpm "D"
Have you ever heard a automatic 1.6GLS spin its wheels.
