First Dyno Experience = Horror

On Matt's recommendation I popped down to the guys from G and C Auto. Planning on chipping the car so first step was to see what the current reading on the dyno is. Couldnt wait, was excited from hearing the car roar on the dyno and wanted to take a video but it was caged behind doors like an animal.

We have the results......and....133kw. Uhm, say that again? 133kw? With my head bowed down they handed me the slip with the reason for the bad news. MAF SENSOR ERR.

They reassured me that as soon as i replace the faulty sensor that my car will be back to its healthy self. Seeing as the stealers qouted me R5700 for a new one I dropped by Bruce's BMW. Refitted and with some diagnostic touches i could definately feel a difference. Much better throttle response and sharper.

So hopefully next week i will be able to post some before and after dyno graphs.

PS : G and C Auto were excellent. Great workshop

Wow, that's pretty interesting to know...makes me wonder about mine? I mean, it feels strong, but my previous car was only a 1300 citigolf, so I can't compare to much. I'm really keen to hear more when you get there, keep us posted please.

ive only ever seen engines dynoed when they out the car so i think it has to be at the wheels unless there is some other way to do it?

Some places give a calculated value of what the power output would be at the flywheel.
If this is at the wheels, I woudn't feel to bad about it :)

I was told the car produces 142kw stock. They informed me that im about 10kw under stock and with the decat in mind im supposed to be pushing at 148kw...The reason they gave is that the car is in limp mode but im pretty sure i wouldve known if it was. I think the MAF was just not doing its job properly.

Just took the car for a spin and what a difference! Everything is just running silky smooth again. Previously when i changed gears at higher RPM it was as if the car was "gulping". It gave a jurk like someone trying to swallow something. But now it shifts with ease. RPM doesn't climb as fast as it use to but speed still increases as fast which gives me better rev range.

Dont get me wrong im definately not gonna be angry at a car throwing out 133kw but if u knew and people tell u its suppose to be more u cant help to feel bad. Another reason im posting this is cause i know this to be a pretty common "problem" in BMWs, especialy mine which is standing at 210 000km and i have no idea if its ever been changed.

Thanx for the comments guys. Will keep u posted

Hey chris, 133kw not bad at all. Remember that over time, cars do loose power. It won't be 142kw forever. So the fact that it has lost that little is actually excellent news!

Btw, going to hav the decat done tomorrow, wil pm you to let you know how it went

Thats also what i thought so actualy not that bad. Just curious to see what a difference the new MAF sensor has made because I can definately feel a difference.

Great! Let me know how it went.

Will probably go buy a cowboy hat and some rope this week to rally up those lost horses when I go chip it.
