fire extinguishers in car... and at home

How many of you keep fire extinguishers in your cars and at home.

I keep a 2.5kg DCP (Dry Chemical Powder) Extinguisher at home in case of any fires.

I need to get another one for my car, but it will most likely be a CO2 one.

I do because of this that happened when I was trying to buy a 750i.

I did learn that the "car size" little extinguishers are not going to put out even a small car fire. You need a 10Kg to have any effect.

I have one in my project car, but it is probably a good idea to get a CO2 one for the oiler, in case of diesel runaway.

Where can I get a CO2 one?

I have one in the car and one on the wall in garage and one inside the house

Being a qualified firefighter one would expect this of me :=):

fire extinguishers are crucial for any car, especially modified ones.

I have a big fire extinguisher in my car, the size of the normal NOS bottles because its pointless having a small extinguisher and once the charge is gone the fire is still there.

Everybody who I speak to with regards to cars I always advice them to fit a big fire extinguisher. Unfortunately one person who I did advice to buy an extinguisher did not take my advice and his car actually did burn out.

And unlike an accident, once your car burns out, nothing and I mean absolutely nothing can be salvaged.

I have a bunch of 1kgs dotted around the house and two in the jeep.

The jeep ones are for camping. I have seen vehicle fires and I doubt a hand held will help.

I just drove past an Audi that just caught fire on the front right hand side.

I have two or so 1kg extinguishers in the garage.

These will go into the cars immediately.

I am a fire extinguisher fanatic/nutcase. :=):

I have one in every room in my house and two in the garage and one outside the house. In my previous life I must have played with fire alot. I have an extinguisher in all my cars...not even a debate.

In addition to this, I also purchased the new Fire chief fire extinguishers from shield at Hypermarket. It's a spray can the size of a doom can. I have two in the kitchen and in the play area of my child.

Recently, our swimming pool pump caught fire...we still dont know how. We only noticed it when the smell of smoke got into the house by that time the pump, filter and piping and part of the branch of a tree were ablaze. The nearest extinguisher was this spray can fire extinguisher and it worked instantly. Spraying at the base of the fire at the pump where the flames were most killed the fire instantly. A random spray at the piping and tree branches and it was all over with still stuff left in the can.

For the heck of it I asked my son to spray over the same places just for the exercise untill the bottle was empty.

See my thread on the Fire Stryker here: http://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=13012

I have a 2.5 @home and saved my sorry butt with it once already :praise:

Need to get one for the car too.
But where do you keep it? In the boot? What if the car is impacted from behind in an accident and I can't get it out of the boot to use it.
It can't be too small either and there is not much space inside the car for a suitable size extinguisher. What would you recommend?

If you are asking me then you have just asked the wrong person. In
my 335, there is a fire-stryker in the boot, cabby, side door and under the seat...

An extinguisher in the car is not just for you, it may be needed in an unprecidented instance on the road or unexpected place.

No It's just for suggestions from anyone that reads the post.
I considered one scenario which makes me think to have it in the boot may not always be the best place to have the ext. especially in case of a multi vehicle accident. One of my friends saved a life before as a passer by with an ext. in the vehicle.

I agree with you. The boot and under the passenger seat is the best place to mount the extinguisher if you go for the conventional one. BMW also has a kit with a mount for use under the seat.
