Filters and Pad choice for ride

Guys, just wanna know which is your brand of choice, Agents only, Goldwagen, or the generics from Autozone/Midas, etc.

I'm due for an oil change and been checking around for filters and was just wondering if cheap actually means inferior or good value for money.

Firstly the reason I was shopping around was I could not find Magnatec Professional 5w30 in 5L.

I came across Champion and Fiaam filters. I decided to stay away from these brands and stuck to Goldwagen where they supplied me with Topran air and oil filters.

Doing research now, I see that Fiaam is used by Ferrari and Fiat, and that GUD makes filters for BMW:fencelook:

Also that the pads that BMW supplies is actually made by ATE.
The guys at the parts department of Sandton Auto told me this.
I also checked that the brake booster that sits in the engine bay in front of the driver has an ATE sticker on it.

So is using ATE pads same as the agents pads just cheaper?
Are Fram/GUD/Fiaam/Champion filters just as good as the agents ones?

Thanks guys, I look forward to you valued input:thumbs:

My input.., in terms of oil, oil filter, air filter i would not skimp on quality, so i would look for the best i can afford. While agents are ridiculous, i find that there are some good german brands. Thus far i only have put BMW filters ( unless the indy used something else, as per my first oil service, which peter pointed out to me at my second service) and Liqui moly oil

In my research for Brakes and pads, ATE is OEM on some/most models. I see my E60 has ATE calipers and will look at the pads and disks when i remoev them in the future, but i am also looking for the following brands which i feel are rather good, Febi-bilstein, Meyle, ATE.

Being in the parts business for quite a while now. Don't go Champion filters please. GUD and Fram come from exactly the same company, and they are good quality, and there after sales service is excellent should there be a claim (which will not happen). I know on the older Merc's, the agents used GUD/Fram with a Merc sign on it

I know that on E36 ATE pads were OEM, on the E46 and E90 it were something else.
I actually ordered me some ATE pads for my E90 this week, I like them, minimum brake dust ( not like the OEM one's on the E90's)
The Magnatec Profesional 5w40 you only get in 1L bottles, so you must buy in 5 or 6 1L's

You can get Edge 5W-40 from Makro which is what I used in my 530d. Carries BMW LL04 certification and I'm happy thus far

Otherwise chat to Moranor about some Liqui Moly

There is a difference between OE and OEM.

OE - Original Equipment is what you buy from BMW
OEM - Original Equipment manufacturer is when you buy a part from a brand that BMW used.

When it comes to buying OEM items , eg. ATE brake rotors, there is no guarantee that the ATE 'generic' rotors they supply to midas/goldwagen/etc. are made to the same standards as the items they supply to BMW.

Call your local dealer first and get a quote one the items you want, maybe ask for a discount. You might the surprised that they are cheaper.

GUD and Fram filters are good. Try and get the best quality oild you can afford.

Brakes: Ate is what most guys good for.

BMW is not bad on filters and filters are not actually a major cost when servicing unless the dealer has a crazy price on the filter (like the cabin filter) I would just get from BMW

I generally tend to just buy all parts from BMW, they give me decent discounts, so I support them. I even get some items cheaper from them than from the local spares shop.

Ok guys, the has been serviced by Gizmo, we ended up using the Topran filters from GW, and the filters that came off were also Topran, and seemed fine after 23000km.

Will try Agents in future, but the dealers around were not cheap:thumbdo:

Gonna try Alberante next time as it is clos to Gizmo.

The oil used was Catrol Magnatec 5w40.

We using OEM rear discs but could not get ATE rear pads or OEM pads today:thumbdo:
