Hey guys still a noob to the forum. i was slightly shocked when i found out the locking mech on my cars feul filler cap was nothing more than a plastic stalk connected to a solenoid. Is there a known mod to replace it i was thinking of something less breakable. Or am i just being paranoid.

Welcome here!!!

You need to post pics of your ride....

Has anyone stolen fuel from any of your vehicles before?

It would be interesting to know if anyone had fuel stolen from them (out of their fuel tank)??

Cant wait for the pics!!

will post pics soon. just got to figure the photobucket thing out.

Have not had feul stolen before.

I just find it a bit odd that a top class german manufacturing firm, would use such a crude method. Either way, my feul filler lock wasn't working i fixed it and thats when i found the plastic locking pin. Probably me just being paranoid. (living in joburg to long):hammerhead:

I have never heard of someone having fuel stolen out the tank before. have had the E36 since 1992 & its never happened.. Well except when my car was in a storage yard And the emptied the tank from the fuel pump.

Well, if they could steal one's shadow I am sure they would...

I wonder if breaking this pin and opening the fuel flap would trigger the alarm, probably not. I think you're more likely to find your car minus wheels than fuel having been siphoned out - or the entire car missing...

I think a lot of us are also quite paranoid when leaving our cars parked in public areas, I know I am! :mmm:

Yeah it is quite disturbing that the fuel filler cap is only locked by a plasitc pin. Opening the filler cap won't trigger the alarm, as far as I know on the e46 the alarm is only triggerd by the four (or two) hall effect sensors in the doors, the boot sensor, the bonnet sensor, the interior motion detector, and the level sensor, and yes that is an aweful lot of sensors :)

AS far as I recall you cannot syphon fuel through the fuel filler. There is a restriction at the entrance of the fuel tank of late model cars.

I guess the point is that if someone wants to steel fuel, they are gonna get in.

Maybe a little less resistance will stop them from doing real damage to the car while trying to get it open......

One assumes that the alarm will go off

Just a thought.
