Feel like a 5 series

As the heading says, I am considering to change my 335 for either a new 535i or an E60 M5

The new car is not a problem, but on the M5, what advice do you have for a second hand buyer? Any problems or specific issues?

Thanks

Early models of the V10 M5 had gearbox problems...some searching around on the M5Board will answer your questions.

Keep lots of spare cash for repairs on the E60 M5. Parts are very expensive and there are barely any after market alternatives in this country.

I contemplated buying one but after seeing the costs for parts on the repair history, I opted to go for the 550i that I have today

That's what I was afraid of

Your 550 must be closely matched to the M5 in terms of specs and performance?

The F10 is just so damn expensive if you start adding the extra's:cry:

The m5 e60 will definatly be my choise. But what i do know is after hard track abuse their diff do give some issues. Also look for a low milage one that has been fully maintained and not missed one service or oil change. If im not mistaken they need regular oil changes (Hi quality oil aswell) As for gearbox, all i know is its dumb whitted and slow in normal mode and makes town and traffic driving a nightmare, cant exploit a small gap unless you are always in manual mode.

It seems like the whole e60 M5's drive train is quite fragile.
Seems like all engine issues are of lubrication origin. Oil pump failure, oil starvation due to faulty level sensors. Spoke to a dealer mechanic from Rustenburg just last night, and he said that there is not a week that goes by without an M5 coming in with major issues. mostly still under motorplan and early in the car's life.
SMG packs up for no reason.
Diffs pack up if the launch control has been used frequently.

But oh that engine is a marvel when running perfectly

The gulf between a 550i and an M5 is substantial, but so are the maintenance costs. Choose one with plenty of history to back it up.

Get the E60 M5, bullet proof, gives NO troubles on gearbox or diff unless you seek to destroy it same as any other car. Just consider running costs, she's not for the small budget.

Petri, yes I am considering both (I loved my diesels), but price wise, they are much the same, performance the 535 s ahead and on economy the 530d takes it (but I don't pay for fuel)
