Hi everyone

I'm new to this forum and I have recently bought an 2005 X3 2.0d 6spd. The tires are Federal but the right rear tire is a Dunlop..?? The X3 also makes funny noises when I drive slowly and making turns, both right and left. I am aware of a possible R 25000-00 knock out of my pocket. Can anyone advice me where I can go to for the transfer case, and also what tires to put on the X3.

Welcome
Whats the mileage on your vehicle?
Mayfair Gearbox in Joburg does the transfer case for R13K.
Also have you changed the transfer case oil?

Hi there I have had my 20d X3 Motorsport since feb it came with 4 brand new fedral 235/50/18 on it I have no problems at 200km/h you can let go of the wheel there is no vibration on the car or any road noise in the bends you can nail it no problems either I will gladly replace them with the same tyres any day
My tyres are the v pattern tread I think there's something else happening there seriously my X3 on the same tyres feels and handles just as good as the e60 I traded in on it
This is strange ?

Running different tyre sizes and types with Xdrive systems is a problem. The computer works by reading the cars lateral movement, throttle position, wheel speeds, etc, all to tell where to put the power. If something doesn't add up in the equation it will toss a error signalling it has just given up and you now have control... Different tyres have different handling characteristics and even though they have the same supposed size... in reality they are different. So if the front tyres are slightly stickier than teh rear or visa versa the computer surrenders.

I have two different approved tyre types on the X5... it took a fair amount of tyre pressure tuning to get rid of the flat tyre warning. At first I thought I had a slow leak... I then discovered that the gauges on petrol station air filler things are way off... up to half a bar!!!

P.S> I run Federals on teh MCoupe and I am flabbergasted at how good they are compared to the price.

i am of the humble opinion that nothing is a sweeter handling comination than an X3 and pirelli. at the very end of my ownership i changed to yokohama advan st - nowhere near the pirelli

Thanks bud, yes I have staggered rims, wider at the back.

the problem is I'll have to fit a different brand of tyre in front as Federal do not make the size for the front.

Can I maybe fit the same size tyre to the front?
front is 235-45-19 and rear is 255-40-19
Can I fit the 255-40-19 tyre to the front as well, and then have the same size all round even thought the rim is a 8J rim, or will BMW have issues with this?

Minimum recommended rim width for 255-40-19 is 8.5J, so I personally won't go that way. You can pick up some sidewall issues where the sidewall will give way suddenly when hard cornering.

245-45-19 and 245-40-19 (I don't know if Federal makes those sizes) will both work on 8J rims. the 45s have slightly larger OD (about 0.1") and the 40s slightly smaller (also about 0.1"). You probably won't even notice it.

Hi there

Can i put 245/45/19 on all 4 rims on a X 3. Currently I have 245/45/19 on back and 235/45/19 in front

Hi there

Do you perhaps have the contact details for Mayfair Gearbox?

Different tyres will do that and different wear. Fit new tyres all round at the same time and problem solved, fit the correct staggerd sizes aswell
