F30 335i towbar

Hi guys

Yes, I know it sounds odd, however I'd like to fit a towbar to my car to fit my clip-on bike rack, and for the odd towing of a small trailer when I go camping with the missus.

I managed to get a quote from the dealers for an approved removable gooseneck version (not OEM) - R7k including fitment. Couple of questions:

1) Is this price reasonable?
2) Anyone on the forum fitted one to their F30 335i yet?
3) Anything I need to be on the lookout for?

Thanks
Bernard

Must be the only 335 that goes camping!!!:cartel:

I've never actually seen a 335 with a towbar!!

Price sounds good, my Prado Towbar was R10k.

Is it at least detachable? If I'm not mistaken you do get the electronic version that folds away but must be ordered from the factory.

If that's the electronic version that tucks away, then it's a good price. When I enquired in last year, I was quoted about 9k if I'm not mistaken.

I have a quote for the full electric towbar excl labour, PN- 71-60-6-865-772
25k for the F10, this is from last December, so expect some "price increase" for 2015.

So the 8/9k is definitely not the electric.

Glad that I stumbled across this thread.

I'm also looking to fit a TB to my F30 soon so also need some advice.
The one thing I gave up when I moved to the Beamer from my previous cabby was boot space so I won't be making another holiday trip without a trailer.

Clearwater BMW quoted me R 6,920 just on the part and then R 3,100 for labour/fitment?! R3K just to install a towbar?! :RedNo:

I can get a high quality aftermarket TB installed for R4,5K but I don't know whether this will affect my warranty or not.

Just contacted THULE and they quoted me R6K (including fitment) for a removable TB.

Hi guys, look at the towbars offered by Thule in South Africa, they have some really OEM looking ones.

If it's purely to hook up more carry space why not consider the Thule roof carriers? Looks hot too! :coolShake:

But I suspect you need two people to get it on and off when loaded.

did you fit the towbar from THULE? and did it affect your MP?

I have not fitted a TB yet but will have to get it done before October.
I have decided to go with a Thule TB because R10.5K (current BMW price) is just ludicrous.

From what I understand, simply the installation of an aftermarket TB doesn't void one's MP per se'. It's only void if the installation somehow ends up damaging any of the electrical components on the car which I can't see happening unless one is stupid enough to have a homemade towbar fitted by some backyard mechanic.

Thule (or Brink) specialize in this stuff and they fit thousands of towbars to a plethora of different vehicles so I guess it's fairly safe to assume that they know their shit.

It would still be interesting to hear if someone else here has fitted an aftermarket TB while under MP and get their thoughts/advice.

Here's the quote I received from SMG Cape Town when I was enquiring about options. It's the gooseneck detachable option, and included fitment at BMW. Never ended up fitting it, as I ended up adding a Land Rover Discovery to the collection instead which I use for camping and towing now. Don't worry, I still have the 335
