Hi Guys, I don’t see much talk about the f20 116 here. Any one has one or knows about them, please share or advise.

Am looking to get my son a F20 and the 120’s are scarce and quite expensive. The 116 are not badly priced. Contemplating the 116 but have not driven one or heard much about it. Any advise please assist.

We did not get the 116d, these are for the euro market.
We only had the 116i and the only advise there is to run for the hills with that motor.. Same motor as the 118i and ours never had major issues but a lot of other ones, other guys have had major issues. Go check up on the Prince N13 motor.

Honestly the best F20 is the 120d or the M135i, I would not bother with any of the others.

Thanks for the advise, I also heard the 118’s has some issues with the motors. Will just keep looking, ciao

I owned both, a 120d and m135i. 120d was excellent. I bought the m135i twice though, before and after owning the 120d.

Really the m135i has it all, but you'll suffer from poor fuel consumption if you drive mainly in city-based environments. I got around 12 to 13l/100km in those conditions. However, if you are fine with that, you'll love everything else about the car. Just don't drive hard in rainy or slippery surfaces as they snake quite a lot and can be dangerous for inexperienced drivers.

120d was smooth, responsive and fuel efficient. I got as low as 4.4l/100km and in mixed driving, got about 7l/100km. It has a small tank (45 litre), but I used just half of it from Jhb to Dbn. It lacks power after 120km/h and you have to plan overtaking moves on the open road when driving at speed.

I also owned a 125i. Fun car, but I would say both the 120d and m135i beats it, since it's fuel consumption isn't as impressive compared to the m135i, and it's power isn't as great compared to the 120d.

If you don't decide to go for a 1 series, try out an S3. I owned one (facelift 228kw). To date, it was my most complete car. Power, safety, handling, design and fuel efficiency.

Interesting that the 125 is not so efficient. My son had a 2014 A3 which I quite liked but he is a Beemer fan through and through, so I sold the Audi and now looking for a BMW. Trying to stay away from the speed as he is just starting off so the 135i for him might not be the best option.

Thank you for sharing

No it doesn't.
520d driver here, if you're sitting at 160km/h behind someone and wanna overtake, press the accelerator and done!

I suppose it depends on the driver and the expectations as well.
Z4 might be used to the 135i and the S3

You definitely have acceleration in overtaking but it takes quite long. I guess I am used to the instant and rapid acceleration from an m135i and S3. To be honest, it took slightly longer in the S3, compared to the m135i. On rolling soeeds, m135i and M140i's are very strong, and keep up with many higher end sports cars.

I guess I must be one of the lucky ones then? I have an F20 118i and it is awesome, I really have no issues whatsoever. I'd readily recommend it to anyone based on the experiences I have had. The N13 engine has been good to me.

Ahah this one was not made on a Monday. If you consider selling it’s the one I’d like to look at

Hi Preggy,

Definitely a diesel.

It will be the perfect vehicle for your son in terms of power, consumption and most importantly reliability.

Not sure what your budget and model or mileage requirements are but you could even look at a 120d coupe (which the son will love look wise) and extend your search to an E90/F30 320d as there are not many 1ers for sale.

Good luck and let us know if you looking for any further advice.

Howzit ///M,
Sure good advise! I have been looking and the 1 series are quite scarce. The Coupe he says looks a little in the older side and probably wanted like the f20 but sure they are a lot more pricey.

He also started looking at the F30 as his mom drives one and he likes it but didn’t wanna have the same car but I suppose that’s the next option. Lots of them around.

Well for the E90, he likes the E92 and I just feel it’s a bit old and big for him but can be quite sporty as well.

Let’s see what we find.

Thanks for the support

I corrected your post to reflect what I think Z4guy meant. Sure the x20d cars are able to overtake easily on the highway, but everything after 160kph takes some patience as the cars tend to fall flat higher up in the rev range. 160kph-200kph acceleration is not really the 20d's favourite.

Wonder if a mild/"safe" tune can improve the 20d engine, it's almost perfect as it is. If there was just more oomph at 160+ km/h, it'll be the absolute perfect daily. What tends to happen sometimes when overtaking is that the car you want to overtake will dangerously increase in speed to prevent you from getting past, even though the driver was driving like a d**s that caused you to overtake on the first place.
