F01 Engine choices

So I actually just noticed something sad.

The F01 (new 7 series) has dropped the N62 motor, and you no longer get the 745 motor, instead, for the 740, you get an N54B30 with twin turbo's

There is an N63 4.39ci motor with twin turbos for the 750, but the 745 is dead :(

I've been test driving the 2010 750 for the last 5 days.... It has a lot of power, a lot of grace.... all the gadgets that the 745 e65 has, it has... the only thing i don't like is that you don't feel the power surge like the old 745... don't get me wrong, the car is powerful but now it is just a big pussycat!

It won't be long before there are no more NA BMW available, read somewhere (not too sure about this) that all or most of the new 3'ers are all going to be 4 pot turbos motors with the M3 being a 3.2l twin-turbo I6 or :gasp: maybe a V6, sigh

Turbocharging is the future.
Better efficiency and less emissions will win the fights against the EU emissions laws.

Maybe it's not a bad thing?
Look at how a remapped x35i faaaaarks-off.
It's a performance bargain and doesn't chew through fuel as badly as one would expect.

That said.. If you haven't owned a naturally aspirated V8 or a naturally aspirated screamer 6-pot - do it soon :)

I hate the idea of a forced induction motor.
Its like a cheat on a game. Nice way to get it (power), but in the end feel a little empty.

My biggest concern with the turbo route is long term reliability. If I were buying an older car (>5 years), I'd prefer a "simple" n/a engine, instead of something with a couple of turbos ....

Dont get me wrong, I am addicted to forced induction, my last 4 cars (ex the 540) has had forced induction, k fine 2 were diesels, and I love the feel of a turbo firmly planting your ass onto the seat...

I suppose its the way of the future as for the reasons mentioned above..... Its just the evolution of the M60 to the N62 has just been so facinating, its almost sad to see it die..

I agree with you. I told my wife the V10 is the last real car we will ever own.

The new cars are so refined and amazingly fast. I am sure the Chip tuners are pulling there wire all the way to the bank. In the E90 range the 335 is the bread and butter car. Imagine when every single model is turbo charged and you can sell your muti from a 316 to a 335.
