F series BMW handbrake

I have had few occasions now that people work on my car and when I get it back the (mechanical) handbrake is not tied back properly. Like now I had a driveshaft nut repair on my F30 and I immediately noticed the handbrake had too much play, it goes up all the way/too high when applying it and it feels loose instead of tight. The workshop swear they have nothing to do with it as their work didn't touch on the handbrake cable. They seemingly don't know how to correct this in addition to denying culpability. This problem happened previously at a different workshop that was replacing a wheel bearing and I made them correct it. Is it such a complicated thing to tie the handbrake properly on these cars?
