Extending Motorplan or Not

Hi guys,

I know this topic has been discussed in the past, but would appreciate any advice on the topic.

I have a 2008 E90 320d with 80,000km on the clock. My Motorplan expires 31 December 2013. I've phoned up BMW and they gave me these two options:
1 Year, 5,000km - R11,200.00
1 Year, 10,000km - R17,700.00

For me the 5,000km is enough. I will most probably only do one service in this period which makes it seems ridiculous to pay this amount of money. But what if something goes wrong? Turbo, gearbox, injectors.

What does it actually cost to maintain such a car? Is everything (including light bulbs) over priced?

Any advice or suggestions will be much appreciated. Really dig this car and would like to hang on to it. But if I'm in for some trouble I'd rather get the motorplan or walk away

how much mileage do you expect to do between now and Dec 2013?

ok my thoughts.

if you use your car a reasonable amount then you will be closer to 90000km come Dec. That means R11,200 for 10000km.

also remember, quotes are valid for 2 weeks only. i wouldnt extend the MP now if it only expires in Dec. I would wait until just before the date of expiration before making a decision. its too early extend the MP now.

will be picking up my 2008 330d tomorrow,77 000km on the clock and motor plan expires end of july,so got it extended for 1 year at R7950 so up till next year july

if it hits 100000km first then expires

i do about 30 000km a year

I agree, wait until closer to expiry and then see.
Depends allot on your annual mileage, if its low would they give you a time only option?

once over 80k kms you don't have the option to extend time only. If you have a quote before the mileage was at 80k km use that to extend by time only.

correct (in bold). but a MP quote is valid for 14 days only and extending a MP 5 months before it expires is risky imo. anyway, he has done 80000km already. If he has an earlier quote before he reached 80000km he can phone BMW SA and ask them if they are willing to allow him to go with the original quote, but this is not always a certainty, especially seeing as the MP pricing went up at the beginning of this month.

I was in a similar situation, having just gone over 80k km and the quote was 3 weeks old. They had allowed it on the older quote with lower mileage. So if you do have, you may also be lucky.

I also wouldn't extend so soon and would wait till December seeing that there is no benefit of extending it earlier.

Amazing how BMW refused to give me a quote before my vehicle reached 80,000km. They told me that they can only do a quote if it is within 6 months of the current cover expiring or after I've done 80,000km.

I don't do much mileage, probably 14/15,000km a year.

Think I'll go with the general consensus. Wait till closer to the time and see where I stand.

Thanks for the feedback guys, much appreciated.

that's correct. You may ask for a quote only after 80k km if not within the last 6 months.
