Excessive oil consumption

Hey guys.

Some advice pls. I' m looking at getting a 1980 e12 525. The owner says the car uses a moerse lot of oil, a pint every 10-15km. Asked if the car smokes and he says not at all. Any ideas as to what the problem could be? I'm sure a oil leak would be very noticeable, at the rate this car uses oil.

It is either smoking or leaking HEAVILY surely. There must be very clear physical evidence of that sort of oil consumption. I am sure it will be clear if you go and see it. Oil can't just be disappearing.
