I am sure that I heard Chris Harris mention that the Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid's engine has a crankshaft-less design - cool tech!!

You are right! Just watched again, but he says, "has no drive belts, pulleys or chains", so made me think it can't have traditional driven camshafts...

This is the best thing since sliced bread wrt the IC engine. It has been toyed with by various manufacturers in recent times including Lotus. I guess the main problem was reliability in a road car application. F1 cars use pneumatic valves but they only need to be reliable for a few races before being rebuilt. Valve springs lose their efficiency at high RPMs. I'm not sure if F1 engines still use this or are using some other means of valve actuation such as solenoids. This is very interesting and I hope Koenigsegg get it right. :bravo: Imagine tuners of the future retrofitting a pneumatic valve actuating cylinder head in place of a conventional set up :thinker:

Okay, the Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid DOES have chain driven cams, well according to this site: http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-reviews/road-tests/8-more-things-porsche-918

"You can perform any minor service without doing this," an engineer told me, "but really, the only minor service of note is the changing of the sparkings [plugs]." Note that the car has no accessory-drive belts, and its cams are chain-driven—so there's no changing a serpentine or timing belt, either. Which is good. Because you'd probably have to pull the engine to do those, too.

Sorry, misspoke above, but either way, very interesting technology!!! I gathered (kind way of saying assumed) this based on this "Its V8 engine has been designed without any drive belts, chains, or pulleys", which Chris Harris mentioned on his vid review.

gains are significant i would defiantly consider fitting these to my car... although the price might be insane to start with...
