Hi Guys!

My E46 seems to be smoking!!!!

When I start my car for the first 30 seconds or so there is white smoke that's coming out from like under the engine...

a friend told me that its the oil dripping from the engine onto the Exhaust pipes which is very COMMON in BMW...? is it COMMON.???

attached is a photo...
I cant really tell where its coming from but it looks like it from under the engine?

Should I be worried???? is this something I can fix my self at home on the weekend?????

any body else experience this problem???

Hey bud,

Best thing is to get the car on a lift and see if you can spot the oil leak from underneath.

Does the car drip oil onto the floor at all? The exhaust side is where the smoke is coming from, so yes it could be burning onto the manifold.

PS: what motor is that?

Regards,

JC

Surprisingly it is common on this motor.
it is most probably oil dripping onto the exhaust, check the breather pipe at the back of the motor(you will have to remove the pollen filter housing).

Also tappet cover gasket oil filter housing might be the culprits.

Look for anywhere that's moist, or dirty from the top down.

your leak might be visible from the bottom, if your car has a dust shield underneath the motor that will have to be removed to have a better look.

N42/N46 motors are unfortunately notorious for oil leaks over time.
