E90 xenon ballast testing

Hi Gents

I need some advice. I need to replace one of my Xenon bulbs on my E90.

A forum member was kind enough to give me a spare that he had, when I installed the bulb and switched it on the bulb blew out.

Now I don’t know if it was the bulb that was the issue or the ballast. I don’t want to have to buy a R1000 bulb and then it blows again.

How do I have the ballast tested to make sure its is or isn’t the ballast?
