Hi Beemers

Got a weird question and searched on the forum but didn't find an answer to this question:

I took my car for the normal oil service in Jan 2013 at BMW SMG, Century City but now the service should be due as I have driven more than 15000km on my 320D. When I started the car as normal a few weeks back, it said that I only need to service the car in 2600km. Now I can still drive for 1400km before the oil service is due. I only filled up with 500ml of oil a month back as the petrol attendant indicated the oil level is low but no indicator came on in the car. I put in full synthetic oil as per the BMW manual.

I only got a 2yr/unlimited km warrentee with Wingfield Motors on the car as I have driven 130000km already. I just want to know if I can still drive maybe another 500km as I dont have R720 for an oil change at BMW. I need to do the services with BMW because of the warrentee on the car. :ty:

According to BMW you can drive the vehicle up to a MAX of -1500kms, your service indicator goes red and starts counting into the minus, this is acceptable on their terms. So in short, 500kms shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for the reply but what I am trying to say is that if I drive until the service is due, as per the clock, I would have driven 17568km. that means 15000km plus 2568km extra and the clock will not even be in the minus as yet. Currently the service message just says that I can still still 1400km and I have already driven 16168km since the oil service at SMG.

Also I called BMW now and they said it can be the way that I drive that might have caused this but I didn't ask anything else as it sounded as if the guy was just making it up.

I really don't know if I should maybe stop driving the car until payday next week Thursday then just leave the car at work as Im afraid something might happen. :nonono:

I know the service intervals run according to driver adaption, however I think your adaption is ALOT more than what I have encountered, or you are just really easy on your car... this doesn't sound right to me but maybe another fanatic has had something similar, I struggle to get 14000km between oil service

I think the computer adapts to your driving style and adjusts the service intervals accordingly. ie it will increase if you drive conservatively and decrease when you push it harder.

It should be fine, however it's advisable to do an oil service every 10000kms on this car, irrespective of what the OBC or dealers say

I never considered this. I drive in traffic and sometimes have to drive 60km/h in traffic. My average fuel consumption is about 17.5 to 19.2km/l and my buddy only gets 14.5km/l in his 320i. Ok thanks mate, now it makes sense why the previous owner told me that he always had to do a oil change at 14000km instead of the normal 15000km.

I never considered this. You and Redshert might have a point.

It's called Condition Based Servicing. The system takes your driving and braking style into account and adjusts the service intervals accordingly. If you drive in town and are hard on the brakes your intervals will be shorter compared top if you did more highway driving

Thanks everyone on the info. I took the car to BMW for the service and holiday check before I drive to Zambia and they indicated that I just need to check when the service interval is due as some clock on the computer adjusts the interval mileage according to my driving style.

Also I was amazed as I dice sometimes with the car (only when there's no cars on the N1 and R300 and at night when the Audi's, Merc's and modified Opels and Toyatas want to take me on) because I just love the torque.

As far as I know, the service indicator works on liters of fuel consumed. So lighter foot and more open road driving will lead to longer service intervals.
