Hi Guys

Has anyone done this fix yet? I have a small oil leak between the oil filter housing and the heat exchanger. There is a gasket there that needs to be replaced, cost of gasket R194 from BMW. Can anyone shed some light on how to do this fix.

Note: Its the gasket between the heat exchange and oil filter housing

Car: E90 2006 323i N52 motor

Thanks guys

Hmm, this is interesting, could this explain the typical "oil usage" that these engines experience? But if it is leaking, are there traces of the oil that has leaked out? Haven't spotted any traces of oil - will take a proper look though...

Will do - have a small "dentist's mirror"!!

Hi guys

About 2 and a half years ago i found oil in the coolant, took it to BMW and R3600 later they fixed/replaced the heat exchanger in the oil cooler and flushed the radiator. This weekend the coolant warning light came on and again i found oil in the coolant. I had my oil service done last month by a mechanic friend. I got 3 questions:

Could he have messed up somehow when replacing the oil filter?
Could BMW have done me in the first time?
Can i drive the car to the dealer (280kms away) without damaging the engine. Towing in the car would cost me R2500

Your input is much appreciated

Cheers

M

Hi There

What car do you have. Not sure if we are talking about the same heat exchanger, the one i'm refering to is at the top of the engine bay.

Your oil cooler would be closer to your radiator i assume.

Dont drive the car. If you have oil mixing with your coolant.

If you have insurance your insurance company will take you to the nearest BMW dealership free of charge you should call and find out.

Oil in the water is usually a blown headgasket, but then your car would overheat as well.

Did you get a low coolant warning light or an overheating light?

I have a 320d 2001 model. the car was not overheating. the temperature gauge never went past half way

I am not sure if the oil in the coolant is still form the last time it happened. When BMW fixed the oil cooler they said i would still have some oil in the coolant as it is impossible to get rid of all the oil. I do have a problem with the air con system as its not cooling the interior by much. dont know if that would be related. its not the head gasket as the oil in the engine is still the same colour. i am wondering if it has anything to do with the fact that it was a very hot day. The car have been known to use coolant on very hot days.

ive already contacted the insurer and they only pay for the towing service when you make a claim for an accident.
