E90 M3 Repair Cost Query

Hey guys,

I sent my E90 M3 to BMW for a quality check and received quite a hefty quotation. I am yet to discuss the line items with the technician but I have declined the quotation for now.

I wanted to ask everyone's advice (with the obvious understanding that no one here has seen the condition of my specific parts):
1. Would you guess these items should be replaced or is BMW just having a laugh?
2. Provided I must get this all sorted, who would you recommend in the JHB area? I only know of RGM.

Note, my car is a 2008 with 83 000km on the clock.

Howsit. I did just get it but I checked for accident damage and couldn't spot anything. No fisheyes or strange bolts etc. In fact, the bolts in the engine bay still have the stock white coating and all windows are the originals. So, pretty sure no accident damage.

Some of the plastics are slightly damaged in which may be why they want to change them? It doesn't bother me. My concern are the bigger ticket items and if it is normal to be replacing the stuff.

Those top items are the front shocks (adaptive dampers). Be glad they didn’t also include the control modules which are another 4-6k each IIRC.

And welcome to M parts pricing

Shocks themselves are not out of the ordinary... certainly not in SA. Adaptive shock pricing for my M5 was 16800 each. I would imagine an M3s would be a little less so on an M3 that doesn't sound too far out. I replaced mine at 113000km. It was only slightly leaking but otherwise OK ride wise - if motorplan wasn't covering it, I would have probably left it a little longer. Anything with rubber somewhere in its construction will suffer over time as well regardless of how nicely you drive it.

What is strange though is the combination of Steering column, two front shocks and that many covers missing or damaged? How do you know the windows are original (either way whatever may have happened might not have affected the glass)? The bolts are not enough to convince me that there isn't more to this but like you say none of us have seen the car in person.

You normally wouldn't know how a car has been driven for most of its life but in this case, accident or not, you have virtually all the undertrays damaged which makes me think that, at the very least, the shocks lived a harder life than most.

Perhaps look into KW or other coilovers for the car which might be a little more money but make sense vs. OEM depending on what your plan is for the car.

Howsit. I got the car back. The steering column replacement is due to a new error that popped up while the car was at the dealership. I did some research and it seems like a common(ish) problem. The resolution of the problem differs greatly though. The error is attached. From what I see, some people clear the code and others have the whole column replaced.

The technician didn't note any accident damage. My car has eibach springs so the covers are likely damaged from scraping things. The springs have also likely weared the shocks?

OK, so now I have a better understanding of the quote. The question remains, where is a good place to take it in to address some of the issues?

Thanks for all the replies and guidance. Much appreciated!

Your last question has already been answered twice...Peter has already offered to have a look at the car for you - he is an official forum advertiser so that will give you some confidence. Take it round there and chat to him. He has loads of experience.

By the way, congrats on your car. Not sure if I've missed it but look forward to some pics. Probably good to make a call on steering column once you've see Peter and I'm sure he'll be able to tell you how bad the shocks are...perhaos you can start off with the steering column or shocks and replace things in a staggered approach as yes...that is a hefty bill bud. I'm very grateful a bunch of stuff was replaced at my last motorplan service.

I remembered watching this on youtube on Samcrac's channel: There is a box (hopefully it starts at the right timestamp) that eliminates the lock portion.
