E90 M3 For Bearings

I have often mussed to myself that of the E9X series cars I prefer the E90.

The first one I had a detailed look of and drove belonged to Chris (fordkoppie)
What I most enjoyed about it was that being smaller than the 92/93 it behaved well on the road even though steering feedback was /is somewhat vague untill one gets used to it.
It somehow feels over assisted and does not give one the feel that you get on the Z4M for example.

I suspect that I am prejudiced,be that as it may I do enjoy the flexibility of the V8 given that its torque is huge and even though isolated to a degree you soon get the message that it is a rapid car and one which requires an element of respect.

This particular example is a second owner car that was referred to me by a friend on the forum.
Thank you Philipus.

Bank 2 (5,6,7,8) with plug 8 requiring special cursing to extract.
It also requires a good plug socket which is magnetised so that you can extract it.

Bank 1 (1,2,3,4) and somewhere under there is plug 4.

If 8 requires special cuss words 4 requires a sangoma to throw the bones as well as a few chicken sacrifices.
Under all those cables and hoses is plug 4.
Respect to those who have changed their plugs without breaking into a song of profanity and throwing their spanners around the garage in frustration.

I found this interesting...look how dirty the brake fluid is taking bets that it was charged under mp but as evidenced here whether it was actually done is debatable. I could very well be wrong.

Every v8 I have done has had a leak on the overflow pipe/recirculation pipe.

which is why I keep saying.

If I could get a couple of double joined midgets on the payroll and rent them out to guys like peter, I would be rich...

Peter if you don't mind - what is the ballpark figure for these bearing jobs on the E9x and E46 M's?

I am sure there are others amongst us that need this kind of info to budget and plan accordingl.

Glad to see you got the business Spiros Spanners...

Now ensure you do a good job - stay away from the ouzo while you're busy with that car. ;)

Plan between 20K I6 /25V8/30kV10 all things being equal.

In most cases this is around the 100k km mark. I can add a few random pics of bearing that are in worse condition than this, also in cars with less than 100k km. On one car, the bearings actually broke apart. But I don't want to derail this car's thread.

Silly question here guys...

Although we all know M cars are "driven", why or what would cause this on these engineering marvels? I am interested to know, because i wouldnt want to buy a M, and within the first 100k it gives bearing issues.

Is it dodgey oil, heavy right feet, no remorse, design flaw, expected life?

Thanks in advance.

I'm buy no means expert but can be related to a number of things. Thrashing while cold, wrong oil or extended periods without oil changes. These are simple ones, there are more technical reasons that I am not too savvy with and maybe insight could be provided.

I did bearings on my V10 immediately at 90000km upon purchase and have a E93 M3 vert now that I haven't driven since picked up on 1 December 2016, till I do bearings on it. Just too paranoid to rev the thing.

Nice to see the work being documented Peter!

Now we can just forward all the "should I do bearings?" questions to this very thread:tiptoe:

Below extract from CLEVITE for bearing failure.
In the case of the NA M engines point 4 is the most plausible with the exception of the I6 engines which do suffer from detonation

POSSIBLE CAUSES
1. Overloading (lugging, detonation, or overfueling).
2. Uneven loading
3. Bearing material of inadequate fatigue strength for application.
4. Bearing failure due to surface fatigue can be the result of the normal life span of the bearing being exceeded.
