E90 LCI Halogen to Xenon (LFM module / coding?)

Hey all,

So I would like to find out, if doing an upgrade on a 320D LCI which comes with halogens, if I swap out the headlamps for the Xenon ones and purchase my own aftermarket ballasts, is there any additional things which could cause issues?

Such as the LFM module or additional coding which may be required?
Or would it be as simple as doing the conversation on other cars & bikes?

Regards,
Psy

The effort needed to code OEM xenons to a car that came with Halogens isn't worth it. Will look for the thread when I get a gap.

Rather just order the DTM headlights and be done with it.. That will be my plan at some stage.

The actual coding takes 5 mins with NCS Expert.

The time-consuming bit is to figure out which parameters need to be changed in the LCM.

I have coded two LCM's on E46 after changing halogens to OEM xenon headlights on them.

The only potential problem with aftermarket ballast modules is that the bi-xenon function may not work unless you add some additional wiring for the high beam controls.

Hmm, so the DTM headlights still have one reflector and one projector. I assume the projector would be a xenon projector or is it a halogen projector?

What I am trying to understand is the recoding, what would cause a need for them to be re-coded. How does the coding work exactly?

I know with some radios the steering wheel controls work on resistance if I am not mistaken, each button pressed has a slightly different resistance and that determines what the function is meant to be.

I like the look of the DTM headlights, however I do not see what difference it will make whether I get the DTM headlights, OEM E90 LCI xenon headlights or alternative aftermarket xenon headlights.

If the car originally has Halogens, it will still need to have a ballast installed and xenon bulbs fitted to the projectors.

Perhaps FiRi@Rennzport could chime in (if only we could @ people on this forum, hint hint nudge nudge at the Admins)

Best decision I made was purchasing the DTM headlights from Rennzport, Quick an easy just pull of the bumper throw in some LEDs or HIDs in the projectors and you all set. Light output is 10x better than the halogens.

Plus to when I bought mine Firi was kind enough to meet me at the dyno day in kempton and brought them for me so saved on Courier.

Are the stock E90 LCI xenon projectors bi-xenon?
If so, I imagine you'd just use the shame wiring for the shutter.
If not, then just source normal projectors which are not bi-xenon?

I see NCS Expert has multiple guides online, would need to read them if I wanted to do it myself. Don't have time to go through them currently.

@PsyCLown oh look what I just did.* hint hint nudge nudge* :fencelook:

:bravo: :ty:

@SubLoaded so how do you tag someone? Normally it would bring up a box with a selection of usernames?

Does manually typing it out like I did with your name work?

OK, so did you add a ballast and then pop some HID lights into the projector?

If so, did this require any coding?
Also what type of bulbs did you use (D1S, D3S etc.)?

Well the DTM headlights have a projector for low beam and halogens for highbeam, I left the high beams as is and then for the projector I bought Canbus LED's and put them in which were H7 (IIRC) as thats was the size of the halogen bulbs that come pre installed in the headlight. No coding needed for anything, straight plug and play.

If you want to use HID's (which I would suggest) then you will need to buy the H7 HID kit (with the ballasts) as well as a set of HID canceller's. The cancellers will prevent any errors from popping up, also no coding will be necessary just plug and play and sticking the ballasts somewhere.

Ahh ok, brilliant.

Simple and easy then, just a pitty the high beams are not projectors as well. Although cheaper as I don't need 4x ballasts then, haha.

I did a quick Google search and it seems the cancellers are the same as the "anti-flickers" which is basically just a cap. I will make sure to get some as well.

This makes it easier if I purchase a car without xenon's, must just get pricing on the ballasts and bulbs so I know what I am in for.

The ray of sunlight is free but the lights will cost you. :smilebounce:

I am running normal phillips halogen pure white bulbs. I was considering a buld that changes colour for low beam beause it looks awesome when the low beam is on...but then again the "park" day light driving are bright during the day and draws enough attention for such an old car.
