Hi Fanatics,

So I'm going to need to do my damper pulley, this is mine : https://photos.app.goo.gl/jmS1DOi5rGOzsP5o1

So I've read most of the threads on this and there's a few questions I still had :

1. Does the tensioner and idler also need to be replaced or should I assess this on how they running after removing the belt and damper pulley ?

2. Goldwagen Edenvale indicated that they (and BMW) would require the alternator pulley to be changed at the same time in order for the warranty to be held on the damper pulley, has anyone else had to do this? Any idea on the cost? Sales rep at Goldwagen couldn't find it on their system BTW I have the 130kw N47 version of the LCI.

Thanks for the help as, always fanatics

Just had this done on my dads x1 2.0d 2 weeks ago,

I was advised just to replace the damper pulley with the four bolts that hold it along with the serpentine belt. First that I am hearing of the alternator pulley, however the vehicle is not under any warranty.

Anyway, sourced a replacement pulley from Goldwagen (half the price of BMW who had no stock and the pulley was cracked much more than the pic above). Got the belt and four bolts from BMW for just under R1100. Labour was R950 to fit...took the guys just over an hour to complete the works...

Hope this helps:thumbs:

I've only ever replace the pulley and the bolts. On every e90 diesel I've owned the pull has given in around 120k to 140k kms

I did mine 4 weeks ago also with GW pulley, 4 new bolts from BMW and I took the time to replace the tensioner, idler and V-belt while everything was off. No one said anything about changing the aircon pulley.

Not such a bad job you just need a tool to hold the pulley while you torque the bolt.

Interesting that you went with the GW part.
I heard that I doesn't last as long as the BMW part? What did you pay for the Vibration/damping pulley alone?

It is also a german made part so I am willing to take the chance, it was 3.5k for the pulley only

Fok that's not a bad price at all! BMW quoted me R7.5k for the pulley alone.
I'd like to see how well it holds up.

The GW pulley is german made, my dad paid 3.2k for it though:fencelook:...if it lasts more than half the mileage than the oem pulley then its well worth:thumbs:
Its recommended to use the oem belt though (1k @ bmw vs GW replacement @ R350)

Thanks for the info. How much does the bolts cost? I think its best to replace all the pulleys one time? In that case you dont need to change another belt if one of the otger pulleys kaks?

Bolts were cheap...like R150 or so for all four...
I suppose changing the other pulleys will be mileage dependent, my dads x1 has just done 100k kms:tiptoe:

Did the pulley fail at 100k, or was it just preventative maintenance?

I had inspected the engine when it hit 100k kms... First thing i checked was the damper pulley and i noticed two fine cracks... Sourced the parts and had it replaced in the same week... The vehicle was still in use... But was very cautious... By the time it was replaced... The cracks had extended to the outer edge probably would not have lasted another day or two:fencelook:

Mine happened on the road towing my caravan. Aircon stopped working and i thought it might have run low on gas but when i got home noticed the aircon belt lying on the sump guard. Then realized the dampener pulley was shot but still on the crank but wob[/u]bling. Quite a relief to have the aircon back to functioning again after replacing the dampener pulley (this was in Jan last year - car in question 2005 2ld X3 manual - kms was about 170k kms) Must add that before this happened i had been hearing a funny clicking/knocking sound coming from under the hood but i could not determine the origin of the noise.

Thank for all the responses, :ty:

I was going to buy the parts this weekend but theres a problem, there seems to be stock problems at the Goldwagens on the East, Edenvale and East Rand have no stock Kensington said they dont stock the part. I'm going to give Benoni, Alberton and JHB CBD a call on Tuesday and hope someone has stock in either a Corteco or BBR. if anyone knows where they have stock please give me a heads up!

If that fails I'll also try Incomex and then as a last resort its off to BMW.:fencelook:

I think I'm going to go with the BMW belt while I'm at it and will evaluate the tensioners while its off.

For the price of the tensioner and idler dont even worry about condition just replace them. Get the belt and four bolts from bmw.

I remember that John from Leo Haase that is on the forum had a special on dampener pulleys last year about the time i had to replace mine so suggest you give them a call and hear what their price is.
