E90 "Eccentric Shaft Sensor" Reduced Power Warning Light

Hey guys I hope you can help me.

We have an '07 manufactured BMW E90 320i. About a week ago the yellow engine warning light came on, which according to the manual means an engine fault and full power is no longer available.

You can feel the reduced power but not extremely at all times. Were just shy of 150 000km, and on an ABSA vehicle warranty plan. We have serviced the car exactly as required since we took ownership.

I've taken the car to Boss Auto Clinic in Randburg as an approved repair agent under the ABSA warranty. Their diagnostic came back with "Eccentric Shaft Sensor" errors which they said falls under wear and tear and won't be covered by the warranty as a result, and is going to cost just under R8000 to fix.

Does anyone in Jhb/Pta have the means to double check this and somehow help me get my vehicle repaired within warranty coverage? I am not in a position to get R8k to fix this - and then apparently *after* that more fault searching needs to happen. I

The only other things I've noticed on the car is sometimes revving up into the garage - some white smoke - and the car seems to be asking for oil in shorter and shorter intervals.

I am desperate for some help or advice - I'm not a technical guy...

Howzit bud sorry to hear.

Depends where you are i know someone in PTA and there are alot of guys that will help on the forum. Speak to Gizmo, he always helps out the guys and does not charge an arm and leg.

To be honest the warrantys are crap, They look for any reason not to repair. 8k is madness but im sure Gizmo will help you.

Take it to someone trustable....

Bring the car through to me, I will do diagnostics in front of you so YOU can see what faults come up, then replace what is needed.

Friend of mine had the same issue fixed a month ago in his '07 320i here in durbz. VVT motor and eccentric shaft sensor inclusive of labour came to R10300.

Is the repair company that has the car now right in saying it's 'wear and tear' and that's why it won't be covered?

Thanks. On the interim I've scanned the warranty docs, no real clarity, ended up on the call center and basically it came down to 'is the component IN or ON, we cover if it's located IN, but not ON.

Obviously I don't know - so I called Gizmo and conferenced him in to explain where the part is, and basically, it came down to being an 'ON' part, therefor not covered.

I explained to the guy that this goes beyond my understanding, where do I go from here to dispute this - to appeal for reconsideration and negotiation, and he told me to email the complaints department - so done that - now... We wait.

This couldn't happen at a worse time!!! :argh:

Hi Gizmo, People seem to be referring to you a lot...

I'm living overseas at present but my eccentric sensor isn't working (320i e90). Car has no power really. I'm going to sell it truthfully as soon as I fix it.

My question though is, what's your opinion on whether I were to put in a new Siemens VDO Eccentric Sensor since it's about $400 or R4000 cheaper. It says Genuine on the descriptions so I get some sort of feeling Siemens VDO makes it for BMW but obviously BMW charge much more. In any case, considering I'm going to sell, I don't see the need for it to last 10 years if you know what I' saying.
