Hi Spiro

The Battery is fine, we disconnected the batter from car and used a meter to read the voltage and it said 12.85V which is enough plus we also tried to jump start it with another car but still it remained dead??

not even the lights will switch on its like the whole electric system is down and the power has been removed...

I would say borrow a battary and check if it starts. Then you know the battery is an issue. I noticed that even a small drop in power in the battery wont allow the car to start.

My wife once left the park lights on for about an hour on the 323. The car would not start, would just make a click noise when we push the start button, just charged the battery and all was fine

Leonard helped one of the guys with his car that was just dead, Leonard picked up that there was a fuse that went and just needed replacement, this was some time ago.

Do not want to hijack the thread but can one just change the battery on a E90 without problems or do you have to sort of initialize it to the car with diagnostics? In the same vein, could one just disconnect the car battery and leave it be for about an hour to reset and then connect it again. Will the car be ok with just doing that? I know that the E60 5 series you need to have some one with diagnostics "pair" (for lack of a better word) the battery to the car. Is it the same with the E90?[/i]

did I not read a thread somewhere of a "MASTER SOLENOID" issue.

Maybe search the forum with this terminology

Hi Akash

We checked all fuses they are all working...
We disconnected the batter for 20 mins But Still the car is dead
We got a battery from another friends bmw and connected the new batter and still the car is dead.

its something to do with the electronics.

we checked also with a meter the voltage in the front on the "Jump start terminals" in the bonnet and it showed 12.91 Volts.

guess we will just have to get a flat bed to come take the car.?

Get the car on machine to get fault codes, and if you have a spare key try it,sometime its the key thats faulty.my friend s car did the same ,only to find the key to be the culprit.

Just to be clear, which of the car's electrical systems are still working? What does the car do when trying to start the engine (noises etc)?

When replacing the battery for an E90 with a new one, the battery has to be registered - some don't bother with this, but these cars have IBS charging which needs to know the age and condition of the battery, so when replacing it has to be reset and registered for the new battery. Plus, the replacement battery needs to be the same type and capacity as the battery it's replacing. So if it's normal lead-acid or AGM, and the Ah rating etc.

Hi Philip,

None of the electronics are working....
the interior lights don't work...
when you press the brakes the lights don't work the headlights don't work

you know how when you insert the key it like pulls it in and then you need to push the key in again to release it?!? even that is dead there are no sounds when you push the "Push to start" button,

we put the original battery back in and called BMW they said there was a recall on those E90's something to do with the fuse by the battery...

thats just round the corner from me, but sorry don't have a flatbed, or the knowhow to sort this electrical problem....

let me just walk out of the shop and go and ask the "main-mech" at the VW clinic behind us, if he has any clue where to start looking.

so the "tech" at VW clinic says that it could one of two things

1)on the positive battery terminal, there is sometimes a "box" and contained within is a fuse.....check that one

or

2)On the side panelling just near the battery, is a power distribution bus, with solenoids and fuses, apparantly there is a 150AMP fuse there as well that could be responsible for the TOTAL power loss

Wow, that's strange. Even if it was the positive cable issue, as far as I know you should have power to come of the cars systems while not being able to start the engine. And all fuses have been checked? It seems as if the battery is "disconnected" from the car's electrical system.

Hope you can find what's causing this and please let us know!!

If there was a recall then BMW should sort this out for free.

not sure about the e90, but my e60 didnt require any additional work, i disconnected old battery put in new one and started with no issue

I read a bit and there is a difference in my situation and others, my battery was replaced prior to it failing, it was still in early days of failure so i can understand why mine did not need to be reset, but it probably still needs it done .
