E90 - Aircon and headlights debate at home

Hi there. We finally took delivery of a 2008 E90 320i M-Sport with 99000km on the clock. Thus, I could finally register on this awesome forum. :)

I have a lot of questions but I'll start off with a debate we've been having at home. There is a minor dispute as I turn the car off with the lights turned on, as well as the aircon still on.

As soon as you lock the car the lights go off. There's also supposed to be some feature where you leave the lights turned on, and they will stay on for a set amount of time so you can find your way in the dark, we had it on the same type of car we had in the past, but I can't seem to get it working on this one.

The argument is whether or not it is harmful or bad to NOT turn off the lights and aircon before turning off the car? Any ideas?

Welcome to what is a gorgeous car and a fantastic forum.

The lights staying on should be available, you may have to have it enabled at the dealer.

As for harmful, I do not think so at all...

As soon as you cut power to the main ignition, you cut the power to the electric clutch for the aircon, so there is no concern there, and none on the lights.

How bout some pics ?

I know my E46, after you switched the car off,
you pull on the brights lever, then the lights stay on for 30seconds after you have locked the car.
See if it works for your car??? :dunno:
...And welcome!!!

Yup, that's the trick on the E46, not sure about the E90. Again on the E46, you have the settings coded on the key whether you want the aircon to be on the same setting when you return to the car or whether it should be off every time you re0open the car etc.

Welcome to the forum.

No harm with the aircon, although I like to turn mine off for the last 2 Km to dry the evaporator out, this prevents corrosion and mould growing on the evaporator.

I only asked out of concern :mmm:
Would never harm a fellow fanatic's ride, unless...
unless it was just stolen or hijacked... :censored:
Then I would seriously "Skiet die bliksems!"
and in the process maybe harm the ride :)

Thanks a million guys! @Coisman, I now remember pulling the brights switch is how you do it, I completely forgot. So many little tricks to the car that you overlook even when you do obsessively read through the manual like an excited little boy.

I guess I will try to run the air out of the aircon but it's really not something I remember to do most of the time.

I shall post a picture of my new baby after she's had a good wash :)
