E90 - Airbag and seatbelt lights

Hi Guys,

Before you shoot me, I did do a search, but since the word "light" has been mentioned tens of thousands of times, I gave up after reading for about 30 minutes.

Yesterday while driving my airbag and seatbelt light came on simultaneously. I didn't crash or anything, it just came on while cruising through town.

I looked in the manual and it doesn't say much. Only that there is a possibility that the airbag and/or belt tensioner system has malfunctioned, and that it must be taken to BMW ASAP.

Now I checked the belt tensioner system by pulling hard on the seatbelt, and that seems to working fine. Also, when I go onto the OBC and do a "check" the airbag light comes on. Then if I hold the "BC" button down for +-5 seconds the following "CC - ID 97" comes up below the airbag light. No idea what that means, but maybe it is helpful.

The vehicle had already been booked at BMW for this coming Thursday for a few items, and now I will include this to the list, but I wanted to know from you fellow fanatics if there is anything else I can do, like battery reset, etc.

Unfortunately I don't have the tools to carry out a scan/diagnostics, but any info you can offer will be appreciated.

the airbag sensor under the seat could have malfunctioned
you can try a reset with inpa and see what happens

Please educate a noob. What is inpa?

In the meantime I'm going to check all the cables under the seats are still making proper contact after the car wash on Saturday. (Didn't think of that before.)

With both Airbag and Seat Tensioner warnings coming up, I would bet the big yellow connector under your seat came loose. Pull it out and re-seat it again.

Problem is, once the Airbag light comes on, it will have to be reset using diagnostics. I can do this for you no problem. But you have to make sure electrically that connector under the seat is sorted. I'd rather not think what BMW might diagnose as the error...

Gonna check the yellow connector under the seat after work. After thinking about it logically, you probably right. I will disconnect both seats connections and re-seat them properly.

I will then inform BMW to reset the fault when it goes in on Thursday and check if the problem persists. Hopefully it's just an improper connection.

Luckily the car is still under motorplan, so they should fix the issue if it isn't a connection problem.
