The manual/auto debate is not so much which is the best. But which offers the best of both worlds. There are arguments in favour of both.

I recommend auto for this particular motor. The step autobox of the 335 is not the same box as for the normal e90. On the 335 it runs on different software to handle all that Tq. The auto tranny also handles the big power better 350Kw+

And the shifts are just awesome perhaps not as blistering quick as the DCT box but still much quicker than what you could acomplish with the manual box.

The autobox also gives you the pleasure of "paddle-shifting" If you go auto you MUST get the paddleshifts. And if you a regular in peak traffic there is nothing more comfortable than "D" mode.

There are more incidences of manual boxes packing up with some mods than the autoboxes. Autos start to slip when you hit 350+Kw @ the fly and over 700Nm but in my case this has not happened yet. Then again I dont drag my car. With this kind of power you try to launch in 2nd to reduce the stress on the box. Or reduce the Tq that goes to the wheels in first & second gear which can be managed with a piggyback tune.

Needless to say, stock 335s with manual or auto boxes have long lives

Quick question, why is it that when over in S mode/ DS mode and you dont use the paddles (or gearshift if you dont have paddles) that it will only go into 5th gear and not 6th?

This annoys the crap outa me hahahahahahahaha, i always used to forget and would be driving around in 5th the whole time and used to think, "damn if only i had another gear", low and behold I actually did, but just kept forgetting to put it into 6th :roflol:

Any of the boffs want to give me a good reason why BMW does this?
It was like that on my 335 and its also like that on my X6

@Scouse - My SMG used to do the same. In sport mode it would only do 5 gears. I think its cos 6th is kind of a cruising gear, which kind of goes against the purpose of sport mode.... thereby keeping the revs higher for sportier driving...

Or at least, thats my guess..

As far as I know the LCi E90 was N54 and LCi E92 was N55.

When I bought my 320d late last year, I was also offered a good deal on a brand new 335i Carbon Sport Pack Steptronic and it was N54.
