Hi
This is my first service after buying the car abt a year back.
Its a 07 323i Sportspack, just hit 120K on the clock and the service light is on indicating an Oil service.

Whats the advice from forum members - should it be done at a bmw dealership or maybe Tune tech?
any advice of dealerships/garages recommendations or which to stay away from?

I need the service done and also checks for any other faults and maybe check consumption which is currently on 12.8 for JHB traffic driving.

Thanks in advance

Buy your parts like oil and filters from BMW, they are cheaper than the other spares shops.

Make a booking with Ross Duncan in Midrand for a service and only pay for labour.

When last did you change your air filter. I would check the condition of your current air filter.

thanks Akash. I been reading really good reviews of Ross in Midrand. might consider that route, though im more south of jhb.

about the air filter - will have to check it out. not sure

go to any bmw dealer and get the key read.
It will tell you what the service is for and any additional parts that need to be changed which you cant see on the dash.

Up to you who to take it too. BMW JHB City Auto charges 1800 for an oil service and some checks with a car wash.
Not bad if you want to keep your FSH with bmw.

i would do the oil change at bmw and get the other parts (if needed) done privately

My 330 cost me R1k for a oil change at the dealer. I think its cheaper to have it done by them and you get FSH. If not, saving a few hundred rand make a difference?

I think not, as when you sell the car you could lose a few thousand because of this.

Thats damn cheap, the oil and filter costs just over R700. You only paid around R300 for labour.

That must be the cheapest labour cost ever for a BMW dealership.

I am not covered by MP but I always take my car to BMW, although I am sometimes tempted to take it elsewhere, I think the dealer is the best bet at the end of the day

agreed Ash. Which dealer did you use?

SMG Durban, but i'm sure others can offer the same.

This isn't the first time either. I even paid R208 for a software upgrade that took the whole day, this was done when I first got the car. It was doing all kind of weird stuff, so it was booked in for a R750 diagnostic evaluation. At the end of the day I got a call to say the ecu needed an upgrade and I wouldn't be charged for a full diagnostic.

Thats impressive what the name of the dealership, on average an oil change is around R1800

hey there,

I noticed your question above, mine is due for 'oil service' now, but BMW tells me it will be: Spark plugs, Air filter, Particulate filter as well as oil and oil filter. They gave me a quote of minimum R5000.
where did you take yours in the end?
I am also considering Tune-Tech.

Things like spark plugs and particulate filter are going to be expensive from the agents - better off shopping around for those items, of course depends on the car as well. But oil and air filters are usually well priced at the agents, so no real need to source elsewhere. Oil is something you can also often save money on buy sourcing elsewhere. Then it is just really the labour.

SMG Cape Town charged me R495 for oil and oil filter replacement.

Was it sunflower oil? Or is that excluding labor or is that only labor.

I would rather service it more regularly ESPECIALLY oil service at a reputable bmw specialist than take it to a dealer.

I would rather buy a car that had its oil changed every 10 000kms at a reputable shop rather than a car that has been serviced every 15 000kms (diesel) or 25 000kms (petrol) at a BMW dealership. Changing a cars oil is not rocket science.

And R1800 sounds excessive for an oil change even at a dealer.
