E90 320i sounds like a tractor!

My bru has a 320i with about 140K on the clock. When you start her up, she sounds like a tractor according to him. I haven't checked personally yet but I'd appreciate any feedback from someone who might have experienced something like this so I can cover all bases when I see the car on Sunday.

Thanks in advance

Mmm... sounds like there may be hole in the exhaust... did your brother drive a bit fast over a speedbump? Cause I have once and my car made a sucking sound of air each time I drive...

I'll check the exhaust but I think he may have picked that up since He did recently have an exhaust leak repaired on my RXi whilst he was using it.

The car was recently serviced and our BMW's are serviced by an independent BMW technician.

Are there any known Vanos related problems with these cars?

Check out the MAF too. Try unplugging and see if it sounds any better/smoother then that would indicate a problem with the MAF

Does this happen only when cold and for how long does the sound occur? If its just for a few seconds (2-5seconds) on cold start up its the hydraulic lifters, nothing to worry about, 100% normal. They tend to lose their oil pressure when standing for a while, especially overnight, this causes them to make a rattling sound when the engine is started again the next morning until they have reached their normal pressure again.

I would say if they rattle for 10seconds or more then they might need a change and the head needs to come off..This can also be caused by an faulty oil pump supplying insufficient oil pressure to the top of the engine internals starving the lifters and not ''pumping'' them up correctly. Not sure if that specific engine has hydraulic lifters but I had the same symptoms in my 328i..
