E90 320d vs F30 320i

Looking to replace my 2004 318i auto. I am considering a 2011 E90 320d auto. Seen a few for between 210 and 250 with mileage less
than 60k. I noticed for around 260 I can get a 2012/2013 F30 320i(bottom of the range) auto with <40K on the clock. Loved the E90 320d for such a long time. Im wondering whether I should rather go for the F30 320i. Newer car more time on motorplan. I believe the fuel consumtion is pretty good on the F30 320i from reviews I've read.
Any opinions guys? Anybody owned both that could comment?

My actual figures: I average 800km per tank with 100% city driving (7.5l/100km) and 1200km with 100% highway driving (5l/100km).

Im sure some people can even get lower figures than that, my driving style changed somewhat after switching to a diesel. Torque is addictive.

I think you should go for what you want.
E90: Diesel is awesome, the consumption is out of this world and torque is amazing. You'll surely land a M-sport on that price.

F30: With petrol you have to watch how you drive and its a new generation.

Your choice

Eish, I don't wanna spark this war all over again.

F30 320i vs 320d has beed debated and argued on this forum ad nauseum.

There are petrol anti-diesel fans on here that will say go 320i.
There are diesel fans on here that will say 320d is tops.

Even the performance has been debated and argued to the point of dead donkey...:floggin:

Some will say there is nothing like diesel torque (like me), others will say they love the "revs" of the "i" and that the diesel feel dead at the top end of the rev range.

Some will say that the "d" outruns the "i", and others will say the "i" wins.

Things is, people who buy 2-litre BMW's do generally not do it with the race-track in mind. We do it mostly for the fact that we get a great balance between performance and economy. If we wanted a race car, we would buy a BMW with a bigger engine.

Fact is in a race, between point A-B there is little to choose between the two. The only real, effective difference in performance is the "feel". And here opinions differ radically. Some, like me, just love the smooth, effortless torque of diesel. Others like the higher revving racy feeling of the "i"

Sticking to fact....... in the "balance" race.... power/economy....... the "d" wins.

Hands-down.

The petrol heads like to downplay this. They like saying that the difference is not that big. That is rubbish. The difference is HUGE.

BUT

The "d" is more expensive to buy, so in the end, over four years, the total cost is very similar.

For me, personally, I just like getting into my car when the tank is full, and knowing that will be another 1000 km before I need to bother with filling up again.

So, there is no "right" or "wrong" here. Drive both, consider price and condition, and do what your gut tells you.

I say test drive both, decide what you want to spend, what is your future plans, how long you want to keep it, etc. Then decide.

Ya we dont need more diesal vs petrol wars.

The cars are gonna be similar in performance. Test drive both and see which you prefer.. .the high revving petrol or the torque of the diesal.

The only thing here for me is that the 320i is a new gen and that for me would be the edge over the 320d.

Good luck bud :clapper:

Thanks Vicus. Im not a regular here didnt see the previous debates on the same topic. My apologies. I am actually looking for the best balance betwen power/economy. Leaning towards fuel efficiency. Dont even care too much about the looks anymore. I currently drive a 3i8i e46 A/T individual. While the looks and ride are great the economy is rather poor in stop/start traffic. Average around 9km/l on mixed driving. Realistically I spent most of my time in bumper to bumper traffic. Have driven this car for 7 years and it has not even gone over 180km/h. After driving this car with its sport suspension im hooked on BMW. I dont think I would ever choose another brand. Being a die hard Opel fan its very difficult for me to admit. I drove a brand new renault the other day that did not feel as solid as my ten year old BMW. I currently spend around R2200- R3000 a month on fuel and the fuel price doesnt seem to be going down. I believe I could cut this down by at least R1000 on the diesel. So I'm leaning towards the diesel.

I own a 2011 "facelift" E90 320d, and use it as my daily. Not a moment of troubles as yet. I do the services, fill up, do the odd tyre pressure check, and just drive.

I do on average 1750 km a month. My fuel bill averages R1350 per month. With that fuel bill, still having 135kW under the bonnet, is just amazing in my mind. Getting in my car just puts a smile on my face.

So, taking into account what seems to be important to you, this looks like an easy one......

Head says F30- as it is newer Gen and if you not looking to keep it for too long take into account trade value vs trade value on the E90 which is now the older model.

However another thing to consider is will you be happy with a "plain jane" F30 or for the same price take a much higher spec most likely E90 LCI MSport 320D?:YesNo:

At the end of the day the choice is yours like everyone has said test drive both before you decide.:coolShake:

Vicus thats awesome mileage. Are you getting that mileage on an auto or manual? What size rims/tyres?

My car is manual.

BUT

I advise going auto. I got my car at a great price at a rate of prime -5%. So although I would have preferred auto, the deal was just to good to pass up. The automatic/tiptronic gearboxes are great with a diesel. They were made for each other. The low rev torque just suits an automatic gearbox extremely well. My boss had one, that is why I know. There is almost no difference in fuel consumption, and if you are going to be in heavy traffic a lot, automatic is even better.

I have 17” wheels

I’m currently sitting on 5,7 l/100km after many tanks of fuel. But I do more highway driving than urban. If you do more driving in heavy traffic, expect around 6,5-7 l/100km.
I generally get around 1000km between fill-ups. If you are in traffic more, you can expect around 850km between fill-ups.

When doing long distance travelling, you are going to be amazed. You can actually drive from Benoni to Port Elizabeth on one tank if you carefully stick to 120. Close.....but you can make it.

And, the great part is, that you still have great power at your disposal. Your car will still be quicker than the vast majority of cars on the road. When you feel the need to floor the pedal you will NOT be disappointed.

For people who are looking for an economical car that still commands a respectable amount of power, BMW got it right with the 320d.

Based on that last bit of information you should go for the "d"

if you want fuel efficiency the 320i is a bad choice

I have a e90 320d 2011, my neighbour has a 2014 320i F30.

I cant say I really want to sell mine to get the newer one. We both bought them this year, He got his two weeks after me.
They are nice but I am really happy with mine and I must say, There is the odd noise from the doors while driving in his. Mine has no funny sounds from panels just a nice oil burning sound and turbo whistle....
