E87 Smoking

So I have had my E87 120i for a good few months now and i notice that most mornings on my way to work, i get a lot of smoke coming out the engine before I hit the highway.

I initially thought I was riding my brakes too hard but that was not the problem since I changed to Powerbrakes. I also drove the same road much slower and my car was still smoking without me riding the brakes. So now I am a bit stuck as what the problem is... Any ideas?

Thanks in advance... :tiptoe:

check the tappet cover at the rear the tend to leak

or..your valve guides could be going but that is unlikely even poorly maintained e87s don't suffer this problem

i just reread now what color is the smoke, you could have a water leak somewhere

Tappet cover gasket... mine does the same every once in a while.

A drop builds up on a little plate and drips onto the exhaust manifold.

Thanks a lot. I shall definitely check the tappet cover.

And the colour of the smoke was a white, coming out of the top of the bonnet (Like over the windscreen).

Also check you vacuum pump for leaks as this is a well documented issue on your cars engine

Just and update....

Turns out the radiator was leaking and also causing some sort of smoke to come out of the engine bay. It had a crack down one of the sides and the top hose return pipe was also damaged.

The tappet cover gasket was also quiet worn out so that also needed to be replaced. ( Thanks to Nick@TheFanatics & spawn616 :ty::praise:)

So she's been resting for now...

But I am in need of an intake manifold breather hose. Any idea where I can get one without going to the stealership??

Thanks again :tiptoe:

volkspares or midas

can even be fancy and get a coloured one from somewhere... not entirely sure ,even take it off and get one made cut(this goes against a lot of peoples options on here tho)

I think this thread needs an update!

Feels like a thread just for my car lol :cartel:

Last week or so, driving home from work, my car didn't rev up even after coming to a standstill or slowing down for a speed bump.

Managed to get the car home but with a lot of frustration! Any way, this was the month I had been saving up to do the valve stem seals repair on my car so just thought that at this point the seals were causing a oil pressure change and causing the problem. So called up a mechanic I was referred to by a friend who had recently done his 1er repair on and it turns out that the Valvetronic motor was on it's last leg.

At this point got s#*t scared because I had saved just enough to do the stem seals and not sure how I was going to fix anything else!

But the Mechanic called me back and quoted me R7500 to do both the valve stem seals repair as well as fit a new valvetronic motor! He figured since he was opening up the tappet cover and working from the same place he would cut me some slack on the labour costs! (He doesn't remove the head to change the seals, he has some special tool to change out the stem seals) Seriously, seriously lucky!

So yeah, getting my car back today and I'm seriously excited! Just had to write about it.... :tiptoe::tiptoe::tiptoe:

It's good to see you found an honest mechanic. These engines are prone to valve stem seals and I hate disturbing a head for no reason.

You think you could be kind enough to share your mechanic's details?
