E70 Loud whine from engine bay, increases with speed

Our 2007 X5 3.0si has a whine from engine area that increases with speed, it's almost unbearable above 90km/h. Where could this be from? At low speeds it's not much.

An alternator was serviced sometime back, could this be the cause? Or is this water pump?

It could literally be anything that runs on a pulley / belt , the belt itself or even one of then tensioners or idler pulleys

if it increases with speed then it is most probably related to drive train. If it was engine related, it would be related to the rev in any gear.

must agree with Sash if you rev it and its not the same as when you drive it logic says its drive train related.

Take your mother inlaw out and see if the whine persists.

Anyhoo - after isolay and lockdown I will have an Indy look into the issue. Whining only when driving, and like above 50km/h and gets louder with speed.

It's high pitched.

Still trying to figure out what the *&#* it really is...m

As an update, that whine were the bearings. Disappeared when they were replaced.

I assume you are talking about the wheel bearings. What is the mileage on your car and was it the front or rear wheel bearings? Had to replace rear wheel bearings on my 2011 f25 X3 on about 157k kms recently.

Yes , wheel bearings. Front, both sides.
Mileage 115,000kms but handling by previous owner was definitely not the best. Or they could have clocked the mileage back because I've pretty much had to replace most front suspension parts at this mileage.

All you had to say was that whilst the vehicle is being driven there is a whining noise and when stationary there is no noise.

I am surprised the peeps tried to diagnose your noise given how vague the description was ...

You know, some folks are actually helpful, and can go an extra mile to be. We are all different and that's okay.

I also had to replace a left front bearing earlier at about 132k kms which had a clicking sound. I am surprised at the many suspension noise complaints there is on youtube on these cars. I have this rattling sound when i drive over the gate rail at my house and i have been trying to source the origin of the noise but it seems to go away the further i drive. There is a design fault with the steering rack it seems and BMW has a replacement part for the steering rack/steering column but mine has that part replaced already so i am convinced that is not the problem. I even replaced the stabilizer links as well as the steering shaft in the engine bay but it is still making the same noise. Am trying to ignore it now!!

That rattly noise over corrugations can well be shock mountings (as well as ARB links which you have changed).
