E65 Forward Bump At Stop

Hi Guys,

Has anyone else experienced a slight forward bump/lurch when coming to a stop? Seems to only happen intermittently. You glide up to a stop and as you come to a dead stop she bumps forward slightly.

Initially the diagnosis was that the universal flex ("Guibo") joint needed replacing. All the symptoms of a worn flex joint appeared to point to this being the problem. A new part was brought in from Germany and fitted to replace the old one that did look a bit worn. Sadly, however, the problem persists.

I have noticed that in D and S it does this but if I switch to M the lurching never happens when coming to stop. Could it be a transmission issue or perhaps the torque converter is on it's way out?

Any suggestions on own experiences will be appreciated.

Not familiar with this type of issue. Sounds like a transmission issue based on your description. Maybe a trans reset will sort it out.

Disconnect the negative battery cable for 5min and see if it has any affect.

Common issue on the early E65s. Gearbox service and reset would be my suggestion, but Google is your friend.

Strongly suspect its your gearbox. Look into a service at ZF. Alternatively give them a ring and discuss your symptoms, they're a great bunch!

If i remember correctly, one of the issues reported on the ZF boxes was a harsh change to first gear, but that was in manual and sport mode. In drive it doesn't go to first, but i also read that in drive the torque convertor doesn't lock up fully between 1st and 2nd, so it essentially takes off in first and changes to second so quick without you feeling it.

When i add the XHP software on my car, where you can see the actual gear the car is in, I see the above.

I think depending on your mileage, you might want to visit ZF. Do not under any circumstances reset adaptations. ZF only resets adaptations after a full rebuild and do recommend doing at any other point in time.

I used to have this on my E39 540i auto with the five speed ZF. If i switched off the aircon it would not do it or the other way around. I think what helped was doing the gearbox reset according to Google or disconnect the battery for about 10 minutes. I would try it first before going to ZF. Also had a very similar problem on my first 3l d X5 (2003 model with five speed auto gearbox). On this car i would brake early and then sort of creep up to the stop the last few metres and then gently stop. The gearbox eventually started learning this and it solved the problem after a while. Just my 2c's

Gearbox, needs a service and new seals. Contact ZF, they do the service directly and price wise it isn't too bad. +- R4500.00
