The split central armrest storage lid on my 7-er would not open consistently. The buttons work fine, the hinges are fine. It would just not open all the time.
Yesterday while doing a leather clean (those of you with grey leather, check out the photos!) I noticed that there was allot of grime buildup on the rubber seals on each of the lids. Gave them a good clean and presto, lid opens smoothly and quickly every time.
My theory is that the grime causes the rubber to stick or have some resistance, hence they would not open.
