E60 battery insufficiently charged

Hello folks.

I have what I (foolishly) hope is a small problem. I must have left the lights on in the car, because when trying to start it this morning, i was greeted by a message: "Increased battery discharge".

Called SMG Cape Town who advised that I am allowed to jumpstart her, but I have not been able to start the car since this morning.

Even had my insurance roadside assist to come and give me a boost, but the guy stuck a charged booster pack on the terminals which is almost immediately sapped of its power.

If I can get it started, I can get it to an establishment to do a test.

Timing is excellent too, I have a week old infant in my house and cant really be stuck without wheels.

Help/advice will be appreciated.

Thanks for reading.

Try get hold of a trickle charger and try charge it over night. It could also be that the battery is old and now as a result of drawing the battery empty has killed it and is now scrap. The other option is to get the local battery supplier to come install a new battery, would charge you extra but at least mobile.

Good luck.

You can install the new battery and then drive to BMW to have the battery "initialized" i think is what they call it. I know some one that has driven his car (2008 E60 530d) with the new battery without initializing it and there was no ill effects, although the battery probably won't last as long as it should if it was done.

I am in pieces about this. If I could just get it to start up then I can make an effort to get it diagnosed and so on. Will continue tomorrow. Worse was the guy that showed up with the battery pack. Connecting terminals and you just see sparks flying. Complaints will be had tomorrow when I call my insurance provider.

I had another tech show up today via my insurance provider, who managed to charge the battery sufficiently to start her.

Then I drove to the store as an effort to charge the battery, which was less than successful. It seems i will need a new one - Diesel electric quotes 1500 VAT inclusive + scrap. Who else in cape town (besides BMW) can register the battery in case the spec is different? Realoem mentions a discontinuation of the OEM part.
