what about maintenance on the 5'er, service/parts/common faults?

are you taking 3rd party warranty?

Already has the extended warranty apparantly, but i will confirm this, and the its had a full service and parts replaced etc to a total value of R64 000 with all receipts. the Valve Stem seals being one of those items. as they apparently are a problem on the motors.

the company doing the Work on the car is called Tune Tech, im not familiar with the company, so will check them out.

Im interested int his too. would that be an optional extra? or is it just the case of having the unit updated at the Dealer?
Unfortunately no, theres a couople of parts that need to be changed, including the screen, the centre console changes from a single cd player to the DVD one and some other control boxes, then theres all the coding that needs to be done.

Tune Tech is great bunch of guy's. I bought a 550 from BMW in Kempton Park in April and this was also service by them after 100k km. Phoned them beforehand and he was very helpful regarding all info. Can just say that the 550 is one hell of a car, best I have ever owned. Fuel consumption on open road 9 - 10ll/100km. Think this is damn good, In town it's a different story, best I manage is 16l/100km, very short trips I'm doing! Most of the time on 20l/100km. But this is not a car you buy if fuel consumption is one of your worries!!!:skit:

You have a heavy foot. I manage 13l per hundred in town, without trying to save fuel in any way.

It's certainly not what I would call thirsty, given that it's a 4.8 litre V8 in a quite heavy body.

Thanks for all the input guys, im still very keen on the 550i, but im getting grief from the office and HR saying they not too happy about putting the vehicle on the Fuel Card for the company.

so judging by Budleigh, the 550i has reasonable consumption? not too over the top, provided it is a V8, its acceptable?

Im also considering a 530d, but im specific that i want a black vehicle with a M Sport Package.

will still keep the 550i in mind though, its a beautiful machine.

Budleight, maybe, what do you get on the open road?
Open road is the same as your figures, low 10s, high 9s. I got 9.6l per hundred during December, but that was really trying.

It's not heavy on fuel, really. Obviously not a diesel wonder like the 530d, but unless you sit in heavy traffic, it's not something that would give you grief.

I have had a LCI 550 for a few years now.
2007 with 55000 km on it.
I also have an e39 530 d as well as an E60 530d.

With opinions on pricing, such as people feeling that 167 k is too high I will probably never ever sell any of mine.

Between the 3 5 series the 550 has cost me absolutely nothing in maintenance other than an oil service. The Diesels while brilliant have cost a small fortune to keep pristine.

The 550 is really, well any fiver, in my opinion is really an open road car.
But the 550 specifically wont do well as a commuter in my opinion, in that it’s a heavy car, prefers to be lazy at small throttle openings and when given gas is probably too alive to make for relaxed commuting.
Further I think the transmission and drive train is going to take a beating in day to day driving and that’s why so many look like crap, from the wear and tear day to day traffic does to a heavy car.

As far as the vehicle itself, it’s a fantastic car, but its not going to say fantastic in stop start driving.

Rear tyres don’t last long and nor will pads and discs.

I’m perfectly happy with Runflats on mine and I really use the performance available on my car.
But out on the open road..

I can add my fuel economy experience with the 740i as well. Same engine albeit smaller displacement but bigger and heavier body. From Lonehill to Sandton and back daily cost me around R500 per week. That's in peak hour traffic with a mix of spirited and relaxed driving. Some driving over weekends but we mostly used the Mercedes when we went out or shopping etc. I found that relaxed driving in comfort mode to be the best for economy... frequently getting around 17l/100km. Open road to Bloemfontein was in the high 8s, low 9s all the way.

Like I said, really made for the open road

At double ton for extended periods mine barely reaches 12l/100 and anything under 160 you wont see much more than 10.

I think my 1800 Corsa bakkie uses more.

I have the n62b44 in my '02 745i.Car does not like start-stop traffic (16-20l /100km depending on traffic severity),but returns around 9.6l/100km from Swaziland to Durban at around 120kph.I get about 630-700 kms to a tank, doing 70kms a day.Would be much more if it wasn't for the 12km hillclimb included in that,it's a heavy car lol.Love it to bits! :)

I owned my 2006 E60 550i for close to 6 years and used it as a daily. Car gave me exceptional service in all the time that I used it. Maintenance costs were low and items outside the wear and tear cycle that required replacement were minimal. The only items I replaced which weren't part of the norm was the tensioner pulley and a expansion water bottle.

Excellent build quality and by far better than the F10 which I now own.

I agree in principle, but just because nothing has broken your car doesnt mean theres isnt anything wrong. If i had to give you a list of the things i have replaced on my diesel, which other than the dampner pulley which is unique to a diesel, one might think that my car is costly to maintain and problematic. On the other hand, I try to be as proactive as possible. I visually inspect items and do suspension tests and whatever else i can to ensure nothing breaks while driving. I dont want my car to be off the road for any reason and if i have to include planned replacements during maintenance.., so be it.
