E46 sunroof

Hi guys,
My e46 sunroof won't close. It's up at the back but the right-hand side won't come down. Does anyon know where i can get it seen to in Durban? I think we in ourrainy season so it's kinda urgent guys.

My E90 did this..not sure if the same process will work on yours but I suppose its worth giving it a shot before paying someone



Put your key in the slot but dont start the car and then press and hold your sunroof button in the sunroof tilt position.

In about 20 secs the sunroof will then start to open completely and will then close again.

You must ensure that you hold the sunroof button in the tilt position through out the whole process until it is in the closed position.

Could be one of the tilt mechanisms that have jammed.

i had a look under the hood lining and i think the cassette for the sunroof is broken. When i try to close it i can see the cable pushing out the side. Not sure where to get it fixed though.

there are 3 torx screws on either side of the sunroof. Remove those and take the whole glass out from the top. Then inspect the mechanism. Then take out the allen key from the tool kit as use that to operate the sunroof while checking for the faulty components. Remove the interior light t get to the manual allen key override.

E46 sunroof is quite easy to work on. IS the sunshade fine. That usually breaks the clips and those sometimes find their way into the mechanism causing jams.

If what he has explained,is what I had it is a big job to fix but not difficult to fix.


Whatever you do DON"T force the sunroof it works on a gear and if strip that gear it is 6500 bucks for new motor (the gear is welded to the motor). Don't let the roof move either, if it makes the grinding noise instead of moving stop cause that is the gear girding it own teeth away. :RedNo:
