E46 M3 impressions

This is just a worthless ramble ...

I was given first option to buy a particular E46 M3 SMG this week. While I've driven a normal manual M in the past (all more than 2 years ago), I decided to go ahead and drive this car to feel what the SMG was like and in the 15-20 mins I spent in the car, I speak for myself when I say, you certainly need to learn how to drive it. I felt almost like a learner driver trying to shift smoothly - certainly did not get the hang of decent shifting by the time I handed the keys back, but I'm also convinced that I still want the SMG over the manual. I did not buy the car though - was not happy with the overall condition.

Anyway, I've got a problem. After the oil warmed up, which was close to 10 mins, the car is simply astonishing to the red line - it's a M car after all and exactly as I remember and experienced in the past. But I'm now so used to the torque of my 330d, I found the performance lacking under "normal" driving condition :thumbdo: . Take nothing away from the M - it's just my impressions after getting so used to my previous car.

I'm in a catch 22 situation now. 12 months ago, I'd strangle someone who told me that a E46 M3 should be modded - I'd swear you and tell you to leave the f$IKen thing alone. This is BMW at it's best and should be left completely original. After todays drive, I still want an E46 M3 - not the one I drove, but another cleaner one.... but someone is going to have to restrain me from modding that thing if I want a fun daily driver again :fencelook:

Worthless ramble over .... start swearing me now :fencelook:

Drive one at the coast... completely different car. I swear to you, we get nailed up here with the loss in power. Its actually a damn shame.

But I agree, no harm in helping the M3 release more of its potential with some decent mods. After all, you did tune your 330d...

Torque is very addictive... and its going to be tough for you to replace that with higher RPM power...

Good luck on the decision.

You mention daily driver, and lack of torque. I think you have the car you need already :dunno:

keep the 330d,will never get the torque of it again, unless you really go and spend crazy amounts of money

buy the m3 as a toy, leave it standard, and enjoy it as it was intended to be enjoyed, from the m division.

The fact the you have only test driven for several minutes, versus ownership of the 330d for a while, you need time to adjust.

It's not that torque on the M3 is pathetic. Memory is still fresh about the diesel surge. You're not going to find that torque with moderate mods on the ///M so you need to be in the right frame of mind before making a decision.

Im kinda going to agree with Andy on this one.

I am totally and honestly satisfied my lust for torque on the 530d, that was stepping out from an E39 //M, which you also had a drive in, it was brutal, but the diesel has more.

Here is the thing why I think your making a mistake.

I tend to share your viewpoint of not modding an //M car, its simply too dam expensive if you break it, ask Crash, and a couple of others.

Im not saying that it cant be done, or should not be done, its just smart, as the engine is already tuned to insane limits from the factory.

My E39 //M had over 230k (cant remember exactly) when I sold it, and it was stock standard. I had total mechanical convidence in the car.

Thing is when you start turning an //M, especially to the limits, if it breaks, its expensive.

Now that diesel of yours, produces more low end torque then what is good for you, and probably the highest amounts of torque I have ever driven.

You are going to struggle to find that amount of "GRRRR" in any other car,

If I was you, I would keep the diesel, and do some more mods to make it more interesting, perhaps a sportier suspension configuration, do a really nice SQ sound system, add some more toys to it..

You have close to perfection there in terms of a daily driver there.

You hit the nail on the head with that statement, but the E46 M3 is one of the cars on my bucket list - I suspect that if I don't buy one now, it's going to end up being impossible to find a clean one in time to come.

For me, this is one of those head vs heart decisions.

The thought crossed my mind, as I could get rid of my IS250, which the wife uses to do the daily school run and let her use the 330d or the E46 M3 (as SMG can be driven as auto). Unfortunately, she also picks up other kids and let's just say, while I can discipline my own kid to respect my car (everything from not eating in the car, to not opening the door against something else, to not kicking the seat, etc), I have no control with other people's kids. Hence, long story short, I'd rather let the Lexus get "beaten up" than me have a heart attack every evening when I see a bit of mess or small damage on my BMW - yeah, I'm strange that way :fencelook: Hence, whatever I buy needs to be my daily driver, my car only and I only have space for one more if the IS250 is to remain my other daily "abuse" car.

Or... as a toy....

Buy an E34 540, convert it to manual, with a 3.23 diff ratio, and mod that slightly..... See how that grabs you for a toy.

I don't want a car as a toy weekend car. I had that in the past - in the form of my E36 M3 and a multitude of superbikes for weekend use. Whatever I buy now (or keep the 330d) needs to be driven or enjoyed daily. Yes, I'm stuck in traffic for most of the week, but when I feel like it, I put on my "personalised" plates and leave for the office at 5:00AM ... but at 4PM, I still have to drive the same thing back home in peak traffic. I have simply grown to hate manual cars :fencelook:

Leonard, your logic is spot on. But us fanatics make some decisions with our hearts, not our heads ...

I think Aadil also makes a good point though. Maybe I just need a few weeks away from my 330d, get used to the IS250's power (or rather lack of it) and if/when I do get a M, I might feel very differently to today.

Mo, the M3 SMG is not a everyday car! You will just get frustrated with the SMG 'box in traffic.

I say put in a top shelf audio system in there, invest in an ipod kit, and rediscover the emotion of music, one of my favourite past times..

I hear you and todays drive re-emphasized that for me. However, I'm willing to tolerate that if I need to.

@Everyone that commented. I don't mean to sound like I'm completely disregarding the opinions - it does give me lots to think about. If I really hate the M3, it's something I know I'll get my money back easily on if it's in the right condition and probably get a 330d again (but in LCI form). I'm not financing my car, so this is not a long term decision. If I like the M, I'll keep it (and probably mod). If I don't like it, will sell it after 6-12 months again (with unnecessary mods removed).

I've got the Logic 7 system in the 330d, which with my amateur hearing levels is probably as good as it gets for me

Use the E46 M3 money as a deposit, for a........
Wait for it.....
E90/2 M3 DCT. Problem solved.... No jerky SMG to 'Learn', and u get a more modern everyday cruiser... Make sure u get EDC, so u can relax properly in comfort, in traffic.

Will cost you more..... That's the drawback.... Come now, u know u want to! :=):

Sound advice there .... I test drove 3 e46 M3s, I was looking for a well priced , not too many owners, FSH and low mileage and as the search went on... The car just felt like an old car. But, as the mileage became lower the price started creeping up. Had a chat to my wife and she said " you'd buy the car (e46 M3) , then start the modding and it will not be worth the money you put into it.Start looking at the newer model"
I was in one 4 weeks later- so, don't ponder .... The E92 is a monster

A well kept E92 with DCT will cost around 550k. There are plenty other alternatives for cheaper. Maybe a 335i DCT? You would get that low end shove that you miss, and there is room for reasonable modding.
