hi went to mst this weekend to buy a cone filter for my 325ci e46.
was told to rather get a flatpan as the cone filters do not work well on the e46 .

is this true .

someone told me that if you use a pan filter you should drill a few holes on the cover to get the sound effect.

please help

if u dril holes into ur box u are bypassing the filter to get some noise bad bad idea :) cone filter on a stock e46 is IMO a mod that you will land up taking off in the end the sound isnt that loud you really have to push your car to hear it at the end of the day your best bet is to stick with your original setup and if you want some sound out of your engine id rather go decat route. cold air intakes are available for e46 its only way to really do the cone route properly but they are exteemely expensive for what you are getting you could always make your own tho id jus go with decat rather. loads of ppl will tel you cone is awesome loads wil tel you its terible and youl loose power ect ect i had one on mine took it off after a week sounded nice but wasnt that loud made me drive harder

thanks .

i just spoke to powerflo in edenval and they will charge 4500 for the decat and a full stainless steel freeflo system, or just 2500 for the decat alone . does that sound right and are they reliable.

they are charging too much for the decat afaik.. people were saying it's more in the region of 1k for the decat alone...

i agree with jase though, you will end up taking the cone off after a while... had one on mine, but put my stock back... stock is the best when it comes to filters imo...

i thught so too, the reason they gave me is that the 325ci has cats at the manifold as well and they have to remove the manifold .

but will phone around and see . can you guys recomend someone ,

but i am leaning towards doing the full system at the same time

so are they going to put new headers or just hollow the current cats out the headers?

you should try get new headers with no cats like these - see this thread for more info - http://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=865&pid=11801#pid11801

also some good reading here - http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=571990

I put a cone filter onto the E46 318i, had it on for a day then took it off. It was way too loud, like irritation loud. but also made me drive to red line in every gear just for the noise.. I would just get a drop in filter or stick with original and spend the money on the exhaust instead of cold air intake..
