E46 Engine swop or not...

Hi Guys

I have a 2000 E46 318i. The motor had a bearing knock and crank shaft was apparently also gone.

It went through to a mechanic who stripped the motor(now in the back seat) and the guy is messing around now.

I need some advice... Will it work out cheaper to rebuild or get another engine?

Either way, I'm looking for a decent mech who won't kill my pocket and reliable and a place we can start looking for a motor if that's the better option.

I'm based in Cape Town.

Thanks in advance.

if you're planning to keep it then id swop if you may sell in the future & the motor is ok then rebuild & will have original engine but if you don't have a reliable mechanic it could be a big issue

Maybe not what you want to hear but I think the CHEAPEST option is to sell the car for parts and buy another e46. Might work out better than rebuilding and im sure it will be cheaper than engine swop.

But the coolest would be to swop the motor for either a M52TU or M54 engine.

Lol.. @ Zulu.. Thanks for that one..

So I visited Reynolds in Retreat. Spoke to Faizel the owner who I must say was very helpful and friendly. Will be dropping off the engine and he'll see what he can salvage. Will keep you guys posted
