E46 Electric Gremlins

When driving with the headlights switched on, The RHS headlight on my E46 is intermittently switching between park and fully on. Also noticed if I switch the front fogs on, it activates the hooter :biglol: further, if I put the brights on, it also activates the hooter....wtf :argh: bloody gremlins.

Where and what to look at first? Will soon be upgrading headlights to HID's with projectors, shrouds and LED angels.

Light control module?

Don't know how the hooter is getting involved though...it's prob warning you of the problem... :roflol:

Ask L Z.. He likes wiring issues...

dont know much about wiring, but if the hooter is involved then somewhere in the steering where the wires come from the stalk into the steering, maybe a wire hasnt got insulation or something

hope you come right, and keep us updated:thumbs:

I concur

It is a safety device installed by Munich to warn ignorant owners. :sorry:

Have a look at the earths around the light clusters and clean them up.

Sounds to me like you might have had a rat play with the wiring. :yuck:

Ok so Speedy's suggestion of a rat got me really worried :fishwack:

I went out to the car now, started it and switched the headlights and front fogs on......no hooter noise but RHS headlight and RHS fog on dim :bangdesk: LHS normal. Gave the RHS headlight a bump with my fist on the outside and both the headlight and fog works normal for a few seconds. Another bump and same story. Popped the hood and warily check for a dreaded rat :fishwack: thankfully no signs of that. Bump the headlight again and it works for a few seconds. I stuck my hand into the engine bay far corner near the corner indicator light and wiggle a few wires and the lights work normal. So it looks like a loose contact of some sorts but I will need to remove the windscreen washer reservoir to get a better look and ultimately fix the problem. Still not sure why the hooter was coming into play but maybe Kish and Alexander were right about that warning signal :tease::biglol:

So the problem was a loose earth wire. Removed the RHS indicator and found the nut securing the earth for the lighting missing. Replaced the nut and all is good again.
