E46 Air Bag Light

Hi All, I have heard that the problem of the air bag light coming on is common in the E46 cabs.

My questions are:
- Where do i begin with the troubleshooting?
- How can I get it reset?
- How do I know if this is a temp fault or infact that there is a problem with the air bag?

get the codes read.

it could be a small prob or a big one.

I had the airbag light come on in my 318i, and the code read that the passenger occupancy sensor was faulty. they cleared the code and didnt do anything to the passenger seat sensor and in the 3 months that i had the car after that, the light did not return.

You need a diagnostic device to clear the fault. It can be anything airbag related, from faulty airbags, connectors, sensors, driver circuits, wires, etc. The diagnostic will also tell you what and where the fault is.

Seems P1000 and myself are in agreement about most things...

No other way to do this other then diagnostics, usually what happens is a bad connection at the rediculasly over engineered connector.

Thanks for the quick response and helpful information. Next question is do you know who, where and how much to get it diagnosed? BTW, I am in JHB, Woodmead and Randburg area.

My Airbag light started staying on today.....will check out the plug under the seat, but I think it would be best to disconnect the battery, leave for 10 minutes, then check out the plug.

I also had issues on my E39 530d , whereby moving the drivers seat forward or backwards, and the light would come on.

I might be wrong....but sometime ago someone explained to me that

1)the most common error is due to a "wonky" connector beneath the seat
2)the slightest bump on this connector will set it off
3)apparently it logs up to 10 separate incident of power interruption due to bumping of the connector, without any warning light, but it is logged.
4)the 11th bump sets the light off, and cannot be reset without a diagnostics computor
5)the rest procedure takes about 5 minutes of plugging in the cable, correct maintenance module.....reset...ignition off..on...fixed, until the next time you bump the connector once to many a time.

I have taken to tying up the connectors with insulation tape to secure them a bit more and protect them from the oversensitive bumps that will cause a momentary power interuption/spike...

been a year now since the last time the light came on.

for info the diagnostics would tell me "DRIVERS SIDE BELT TENSION---FAULT NOT CURRENTLY PRESENT"

airbag lights will not clear with a battery reset,

Sorry folks, modules are designed that way in case there is a post accident investigation.

only way to clear is with diagnostics

It could be a host of things from SOC (Seat Ocpuancy Sensors) to seatbelt pre-tensioners, to airbags, fuzzy rodents in the ashtry

It usually is electrical though.

There is a sneaky that you can do by putting a resistance value over the channel giving you trouble, but thats pretty pointless considering that the channel on a product designed to safe your life is bypassed.

This is 100% true, I had that problem after my silly fiddling with my car's headrests. It was then cleared by BMW

How was it sorted?

My airbag light came about 5 times intermittently on the way home, only after a passenger jumped in.

I replaced my seats with E46 M3 seats about 2 months ago, and today is the first time I had the problem.
I also installed DVD screens the day after the seats install.

Not sure if related.

I would the the fault would log as to which airbag was going off. First step diagnostics. But I would guess seat occupancy sensor.
