My E46 330i revs occasionally hunts, at idle at times, and at times revs don't drop as soon as I take my foot off the gas, any idea what causes this?

Have you had the codes read? Will help identify the issue, else it could be a number of things,  coil packs, maf,  vacuum leak etc etc...

Spray quick ignite around the air pipes to check for vacuum leaks. If it’s not vacuum leaks then get the codes read etc.

Most likely the flexible intake rubber boot after the maf is split, allowing unmetered air into the intake manifold. It is a common failure point on the M54 motor.

If you have a Vape, do a "smoke Test" on it.

My ghetto smoke test steps:

Pull the maf
tape a rubber glove over it
snip 1 fingertip and and tape a Pipe to it.

Open your Oil filler cap and blow smoke through the pipe.

Once you see smoke coming out of the Oil filler cap, CLose it.

Then carry on blowing smoke into the pipe. ( Close the Pipe with your finger to keep the smoke in )

smoke will start Coming out of the vac leak area

Vacuum leak most likely. If it is then hopefully just one of the intake boots, and not the CCV system.
