Hey Fanatics

In your opinion .. which is a better car and why ?

How reliable and how costly to maintain / repair ?

Always loved the 330d and it is a torque monster of note so kinda leaning towards the E46 ..

What work can be done to the 320d and what are the figures ?

Thanks in advance peeps :)

Hi Kaveek..

I will go for the E90 320d LCI (I have one)
But it also depends on which spec you looking at in both ways?
Which year model 330d / 320d
330d: 135kw/150kw?
320d: 115kw/130kw or LCI?

If you can get a LCI 320d, I would say go for that. Tha power is good comparing against the E46 330d, will be a newer car, have motorplan left etc.

But tell us more about the models you looking at?

Thanks for feedback and input .. much appreciated :)

Going to test drive this weekend so will have a better idea of what the cars feel like to drive and the interior details etc

I love my power and the thought of a E46 330d decat .. downpipe and software pushing +-700nm is very tempting. Are there any weaknesses on the 330d drive train ? Will only go manual route .. howz the 6 speed boxes and are there any known issues with the diff ?

I am also loving the design of the E90 and like already mentioned, I can probably get one still with a warranty or motorplan

Would a E46 handle a 700Nm torque without stressing it?
My x-girlfriend (E46 330D with M54TUD30 engine) made 535Nm on the wheels at SAV's dyno and it kept braking engine mountings. It had a 6speed box with synthetic motor oil and it never gave any problems for the five years I had it.
So only mounting problems I know of, but sure if it wasn't for the mountings braking, something else probably would have.

Oooh .. I'm loving those figures. :praise:

If there's one thing I wish my 20v had was more torque so thats why I'm leaning towards the 330d to experience driving a high torque monster compare to a high revving VVT setup. So tell me what were ur best kills with your car ?

I'm sure they can make more power today then when I had mine, since software get's better and better and can control more things.
One more thing, the 3.0l diesel engine also sounds better then the 2.0l four-pot engine. I had people that could not believe my Beem was a tractor because of the exhaust tone it had.

this is only if you want something smokey for racing VW's and Opels.

My 2cents, we have both cars.

The 330d apparently has a GM gearbox to my understanding, later they switched it to a BMW gearbox. We have changed the gearbox 3 times. It is auto though I do not know if the manual is any stronger.

The 330d pulls like a monster you can feel the massive amounts of power it has. Even though mine has done 400 000+ kms the thing has almost no issues besides the gearbox. You can feel the power trying to pull the heavy metal chassis. The E90 is much lighter and nippier. The 330d is still probably slightly faster, but as i said its sluggish, it feels like its trying to drag 10 tons of metal bodywork around. Both are amazing cars, and you will love them both.

But i would go with the newer car. or push for a E90 330d as that my friend, is BADASS.
