e46 325i white smoke on takeoff

Hi guys, my e46 325i spews white smoke at takeoff from a robot or when the car shifts down to lower gears. Also noticed that my coolant is going down too quickly, as in fill today and tomorrow its gone but no overheating. There is also a funny smell of something burning when seated in the car. Any help?

Hi Tindo!

Not the best combination with the 'white' smoke & coolant dissapearing like that.

The other guys can perhaps give you more detailed input, but to me that sounds like the cylinder head gasket being the cause of the this.

Or sometimes what happens is, should the car have ran into overheating temps at some stage, this also tends to damage the gasket, or even die cylinderhead itself, depending on how hot she ran!

Have it checked out before anything else also get damaged, then its gonna cost even more to repair!

Good luck man!

Please check out the inside of the oil filler cap and dipstick, milky residue = head gasket if I’m not mistaken.

Also read somewhere about the oil cap, but I have checked and there is no milky residue. Also the oil dipstick shows just plain oil, no discolouration at all. Just hoping its not the gasket.

As Flex said, get that attended to ASAP. Water/coolant burning off in combustion chamber. Head Gasket most likely. Check for "baby-shit" in oil filler cap. If oil mixes with the water, it's gonna make a mess of the cooling system, stuffing up everything including radiator. Not to mention possible overheating and the head damage that will do. Take the car in to someone reputable ASAP to check it out.

Checking the dipstick for a busted head gasket is a pointless exercise. Remember the oil is on top of the water (suppose there is water in the sump) so when you pull out the dipstick it goes through the oil last so there will always be oil only on the dipstick.

Personally I would do a compression test first. This is cheap and an effective way to determine if there is a problem. I would also have the water tested for excessive combustion gasses.

I agree with the other comments, don't drive the car while you are not sure what the issue is.

Really appreciate the advice, I am in Joburg south, any idea where I can do a compression test?

Hi Guys

Still trying to find my way around this forum.

I have a E46 325ci and seem to be getting an usually loud sound from the Wiscus fan. (Sounds like an Isuzu bakkie) Also feels very sugglish when i put my foot down. All this started when i realized the car was over heating.
Changed the thermostat and wiscus fan only to discover there was a crack in the water bottle. Ever since changing the fan this is what im plagued with.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Kyle

Hey Kyle, if I understand correctly, you already change the thermostat & wiscus fan?? This after your car overheated, exactly how much did it overheat? No power?

If this is the case and your engine sounds like a Isuzu diesel, then there is a major problem present, or strongly on it's way!

Sounds like this could be piston knocking, or maybe bearing knocks. ( Maybe sticky valves if hydraulic activated )
Thats my opinion, I'm sure some of the other forum experts will know better, I'm just playing it by ear in a 'general technical sense' .

Posting a thread, have a look just below the white google search bar, there is a few headings, select the BMW fanatics forum, and then the next applicable one etc, eventually right hand top corner you can select 'New Topic' , and off you go!

I also got it with assistance of friendly guys on the forum! http://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/forumdisplay.php?fid=14

Good luck man!

Hi

No the engine is fine, the car was over heating because all the water was leaking out from the crack in the water bottle. Only discovered this after I had changed the viscous fan, viscous clutch
& thermostat. After that I serviced the car.

As for the noise, its sounds like the fan on an Isuzu bakkie. The Fan is super loud after i drive it about 2km after it was parked all night. Then the fan noise continues all through the day. There is no noises coming from the engine itself.

Thanks

Kyle

O okay, then I misunderstood.

Maybe the fan & viscous stays permanently engaged, spinning/driving constantly with the engine rpm up & down, causing the noise?

Post a new thread/new topic on this, in order for the guys to comment on your question, who knows your model as well.
Maybe a picture of the fan drive up close will assist?
