Hi Guys.

I need to trade my 4.0 V6 double cab in for something more sensible (fuel wise). I have seen a 2004 325i Manual with 158 000 km on the clock for R89 000, but would prefer an Auto 325i.

What do I need to look out for? Going to use it as a daily driver for at least another 80 000 km's so I would not want to spend a lot on issues popping out. Also, what would you deem as maximum km's to buy at?

Thank for any advice.

325i are goods cars, auto can feel a bit sluggish though. They are very lazy off the line, great drive when they pick up speed.

You should rather buy a 330i. More torque and same fuel consumption, especially necessary if you are buying an auto.

The auto box will also probably fail, so that's a risk you need to budget for. Manuals are far more reliable.

Buying a trouble free e46 has less to do with mileage and more to do with service history. Cooling system is weak. Check suspension thoroughly.

If well looked after and the right grade of oil is used, the M54 motors should last a very long time. If you do get it, replace the expansion tank, thermostat and serpentine belt at the very least for piece of mind.
