E46 320D injector issues and INPA

Morning guys

I have finally got my INPA cable from eBay and decided to hook it up yesterday while driving home to see what my 320D injectors are up to. I have been getting a diesel knock and black smoke since i got the car and was convinced it is injectors as i have already ruled out sensors with the help of a friend.

I know that the car was heavely tampered with before I got it, the evidence was all over the show when i started scratching. Anyhow, i picked up that injectors 2 and three are perfect. Mass adjustmebt is minimal on them at idle and while driving. However, on injectors 1 and 4 its a different story. No 4 over compensates into the red and 1 is undercompensating into the red. What i did pick up though is that the two seems to be mirror images of each other. Only errors i am getting is on the glowplugs though but that shouldnt have an effect once the car is warmed up?

Please indulge my theory and then tell me if i could be onto somthing or if i am way off course. I believe it may be due to the two injectors being swopped. The fact that the compensation is mirrors of each other tells me that this may be the case. Am I on the right track or am i missing something? I will be checking the injector coding over the weekend and be able to do some screen shots. Just trying to get my head around this.

Sorry for the lengthy post but any help or advice will be much appreciated. Thanks

AFAIK injectors 1 and 4 work as a "TEAM" for lack of a better term, while injector 2 and 3 work together. This means that if the one injector of the common rail is underfueling, the other injector picks up the slack. Fixing one of the injectors would then most probably sort the other out.

I have 2 320d injectors on the Donar car.

If you were cape town based u could have Used it to test and see if readings are differnt

I have no experiance with the diesels so will be watching this Thread to learn allittle

Thanks for the feedback Schalk. I'll check the injector coding this weekend just to rule that out first and then have a look at the two injectors with wacky readings. Should it be the case of a faulty injector, which would be the most likely culprit? The under or overfueling one?

Hi Guys

Quick update. what I have done so far was to swop injector 3 and 4, do the injector coding, problem persisted on cylinder 1 and 4. This led me to believe the problem is on cylinder 1. This weekend I tried to remove injector no 1 and surprise, the injector is stuck solid. My guess is I have been loosing compression here due to blow by, resulting in a carboned up injector.

My question now is, does anyone know of someone with the correct tools to remove this injector in Pretoria that doesn't want to charge me an arm and a leg to do so. So far every person I have asked is looking for money and wants to have my car for days, billing by the hour. I am proficient in doing the work and labour, I just need help with removing the actual injector once everything is stripped away. Anyone?

If not, any ideas on how I can achieve this myself, or purchase the tools? I am yet to find a Pretoria based vendor.

Thanks guys

Sliding Hammer from Adendorff should do the trick Explain what you want to do, they can probably advise exactly what will work.

BIT#H to remove...

took about 4 hours to try to get 1 injector out using sliding hammer..
so i used a tube socket ( Must sit flush over the Valve thing ) with extension and move it side to side to Loosen up the Carbon. as i done that, i sprayed Wurth Penetrating fluid on injectors and left it over night

Next day, 15min job each with the sliding hammer
Good luck

Hi, I have a diy tool which works perfectly, it’s a bolt with a nut welded to the other end. You thread it into the small area and wiggle a bit. Works like a charm

I also have a slide hammer style tool which you screw into the top of the injector. I had it engineered when I was facing the same issue.

Looks good. Question, using that sliding hammer, is the injector still useable afterwards? I would assume you need to disassemble the top part of the injector to use that?

Yes, still usable afterwards. All you do is unscrew and put back together after make sure you don’t let any dirt go in there. Yes you need to take the top part off. I still used the injector but my issue was a burnt piston in that cylinder as it was leaking diesel. I had to take off the head and replace the piston. I bought a nozzle from diesel electric and all was good.

Very nice. Where about are you. Any chance i could get the specs of that sliding hammer from you?

I’m in randburg. The tap required for the thread is very scarce. I was lucky as not many engineering companies cary that tap. I actually took one of my other injectors apart and went from one place to another to show them what I want.. when I finally got someone, they let me stand there while cutting the thread, all of about ten minutes...:bravo:

I had it done in Roodepoort CBD

Hi guys

Quick update, eventually decided to remove the solenoid part from the top of the injector and basically destroy it to get the nut from it. Built a sliding hammer using the nut at the end of it, and after 3 weeks of brake cleaner, loads of very difficult patience (and swearing), the injector came free this weekend. Got a second hand injector for a good price, installed it and recoded using INPA. My Beemer is alive again and running like a dream :smilebounce: . Next up.... to the car wash we go hehehe

I'll upload some pics of the tool later today.
