E46 318i Reving on its own

Hi Gents.

My 2004 E46 318i recently just started reving on it own.

The car was parked for about 2 months with regular starts now and then.

But the battery ran flat and I jumped started the car and then it started reving itself...

Any clue what this could be?
Is there a DIY solution?

Please help :hammerhead:

As in rev hop at idle? (I.e. it's bouncing up and down and not settling on 900 rpm. )

Or is it sitting up at the red line and bouncing off the rev limiter. ?

Yes it's hopping revs up and down to about 2000 rpm

Check that all your vacuum lines are tightly secure. Also check for cracks on all the lines. I'm no expert but with the e36 this is a common issue

that jump start could've messed with stuff..

i reckon try and disconnect your battery completely, then touch the positive and negative cables from the car (not the battery) together to flatten any voltage that may be present in the system. it will "reset" everything.

hook up the battery again.

also have your battery recharged fully or tested incase its become faulty

I had the same issue, i cleaned out the MAF Sensor and it was sorted

It was also after the battery went flat and i jump started it

How long did you let it idle for?

A bit late, hope this is sorted by now.

If not then maybe unplug the MAF or the ICV (idler control valve) and see if the car stops reving. Had this issue on my E36 where it will just start reving while I am at the stop, everyone thought I was a learner :biglol: . turned out to be a dirty ICV that I just cleaned with some tissue and alcohol.

Jip and then when you go the car will bulk and you would look like you need a L in the rear window :biglol::biglol:
